Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies, Ryan Institute and School of Physics at the National University of Ireland Galway. This position is funded by the European Space Agency and is available from 1st January 2013 to contract end date of 31st December 2014, subject to final approval by the funding agency.

Project Title: Volcanic Ash Strategic-initiative Team (VAST) - Enhancing Use of EO in Volcanic Ash Monitoring and Forecasting

Job Description: The successful candidate will develop automated LIDAR analysis tools and algorithms for the detection of volcanic ash clouds, dust pollution events and trans-boundary air pollution quantification. Real-time LIDAR data will be operationally-available from a new 4-node (north-south-east-west) RAMAN LIDAR network deployed jointly by the Irish Aviation Authority and NUI Galway. The pilot ash detection network will contribute to the VAST project.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and strong physical/mathematical science experience is essential. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, and in particular ground-based remote sensing. The ideal candidate would have experience in aerosol and LIDAR measurements, associated data analysis, and excellent programming skills as evidenced by an appropriate publication record. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new products; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.

Salary: €38,286 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
