Post title: Part Time Animal Management Technician/Supervisor
Based at:Duchy College, Rosewarne
Reports to:Head Technician for Animal Management
Responsible for:General care and husbandry of animals and maintenance of animal areas (to include small animals, exotics and farm livestock)
Grade/salary scale:CC_09 £7.51/hour – 18.5 hourse/week (52 weeks/year)
Generic role of post:
The person appointed will be based primarily at the Animal Management Centre to
care for and maintain the animal-based resources for the Animal Management
Department and tohelp in the supervision of students of a range of abilities.
He/she will be working closely with the Head Technician, the other
Duchy College Animal ManagementTechnician/Supervisors and with lecturing and
instructing staff.
Specific duties:
- Preparing food, feeding and watering a range of different animals kept at the Animal Management Centre at Duchy College Rosewarne.
- Cleaning and maintenance of animal accommodation and working areas of the Animal Management Unit.
- Monitoring and reporting on the health of the animals within the Animal Management Centre.
- Keeping up to date animal records.
- Providing specialist knowledge and skills in the husbandry, health care and breeding of a range of small animal species and provide basic instruction in this area to students at a range of levels.
- Assisting and providing support to other Animal Management Technicians/Supervisors and teaching staff.
- Support and supervision of Animal Management Students during practical sessions.
- Working regular weekends as part of the normal weekly rota and providing Bank Holiday and holiday cover when required.
- Assisting with promotional events for the Animal Management and Veterinary Nursing Department.
- Become actively involved in the corporate life of the College and attend College functions,
- Attend meetings and other functions (including evening and weekends) as requested.
- Follow a programme of planned staff development as identified through the Staff Appraisal system.
- Undertake any other duties consistent with the grade and general responsibilities of the post as may be required from time to time in addition to those listed above by either the Curriculum Area Manager for Animal Management & Veterinary Nursing or the Principal.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Level 3 or equivalent in an Animal Management-related
subject.
Driving Licence
Desirable:Level 4 or higher in Animal Care/Animal Management/Veterinary Nursing or related subject
Experience
Essential: Experience of working with a range of animalsto industry standardsand working as a team member
Desirable: Experience of working with and supervising students of a range of abilities and ages.
Personal Attributes and Qualities
Essential: Must be honest, reliable, conscientious and well-organised.
Good communication skills, good teamwork and supervisory skills.
Able to work under pressure and use own initiative.
Aptitude with animals and people
Desirable: Keen to develop and take on varied responsibilities.
