JOB DESCRIPTION

Post: Principal Residential Child Care Officer

Grade: NJEBand A pts 29 -34

Accountable to: Head of Extended Provision

Hours:18.5 hours per week, term-time only

General Description of Post:

To co-ordinate and supervise the staffing and day to day running of the department.

To liaise with other professionals regarding the targeting and implementation of academic social and personal care programmes for pupils.

To take responsibility for health and safety within the department

Specific duties:-

In addition to working as part of the departmental team in carrying out the normal duties of a Residential Child Care Officer (see attached), the Principal Residential Child Care Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

1. To ensure that the routine operation of the residential unit is consistent with National Minimum Standards for Residential Special Schools and the overall policies and philosophy of the school. An annual Self Evaluation framework is completed to evidence this.

2. To provide residential department staff with regular supervision and annual appraisal in accordance with school procedure

3. To manage the residential unit in terms of allocation of duties and responsibilities and continuing staff development by day to day supervision and oversight.

4.To oversee the implementation of school policies within the department.

5.To be responsible as a First Aider for the department.

6.To be responsible as Link Worker for manual handling.

7.To be responsible for health and safety within the department, including the completion of risk assessments, medication and treatment records, health care plans, consistency plans and fire registers etc. To oversee completion of personal and intimate care plans

8. To manage the departmental budget in collaboration with the School Principal.

9. To submit an annual departmental development plan and review.

10. To provide guidance and support for staff members in the department.

11. To contribute to the overall management and development of the school, attending management meetings as required.

12. To assist with recruitment, appointment, staff development and induction of staff.

13. To develop residential care and education plans for individual pupils in liaison with other professionals from within the school and outside agencies.

14.To work collaboratively with the Specialist Teaching Assistant for Independence in providing activities to support pupils to meet individual targets for independence, maintain ongoing pupil progress records and provide evidence of progress.

15To provide pupils and parents with pre attendance information regarding the required criteria and agreement through induction meetings

16. To produce reports for the Senior Management Team as required, including individualpupil progress reports for each pupil’s Annual Review.

17. To support school based staff in the running of After School Clubs, and to organize social interaction activities for residential pupils outside these times

18. To liaise with and support families of all resident pupils where appropriate.

19. To undertake specific administrative tasks as appropriate, including salaryclaims, organizing staff cover etc.

20. To carry out any other duties deemed appropriate to the post as directed by the Head Teacher, subject to the proviso that normally any changes of a permanentnature shall be incorporated into the job description.

Monday 15.00 – 22.00

Tuesday 07.30 – 09.45

15.00 – 22.00

Wednesday 07.30 – 09.45

A sleeping-in duty is requiredfor which an additional allowance will be paid.
