CALL TO CONFESSION – Liturgist Christine Duryea

We are called to examine our faithfulness to God’s covenant with us. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. God, in whose presence we gather, promises us grace and pardon when we acknowledge our spiritual wandering. Let us confess our sin to almighty God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Congregation

Everlasting God, forgive us for being consumed with petty concerns rather than seeking eternal values. We have pursued our own agendas, shoring up our egos, rather than offering you our fears and seeking our security in you. You are our dwelling place, yet we have strayed far from home and doubted your steadfast love. You bless us with abundance, yet we lament meaninglessness in the brevity of our lives. Grant purpose to our days and significance to our labors. Help us to receive each new day as a gift and to use your gift wisely and well. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.

KYRIE, No. 437 Appalachian Folk Melody

You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

You are the Christ, giver of mercy!

You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

SILENT MEDITATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our custom is to join hands for the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE – Liturgist

God hears the confession of our hearts and lips. Through Jesus Christ we are forgiven all our sins, and by the Holy Spirit we are empowered for new life. Let us believe the good news of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Finding the WOW! In God’s Word and World. This new study will focus on William P. Brown’s, Sacred Sense – Discovering the Wonder of God’s Word and World. A secondary resource will be Annie Dillard’s Pulitzer-winning (1974) non-fiction journal, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Brown’s book deals with Biblical examples of “marveling” whereas Dillard looks at the ground up, the wonders of the natural world discovered from observing the outdoors around Tinker Creek, near Roanoke, Virginia. Both authors will invite us to see with new eyes God’s surprises – and grace - all around us. We will meet Tuesday at 9 a.m., at the home of Sara and Merrill Wood, 1372 California Street, Imperial Beach. For more information or directions, call Pastor Steve at 619-437-8757 or cell, 714-448-9728.

Understanding the Universe – An Introduction to Astronomy. Are we overwhelmed with all the details of daily living? Do we miss the bigger picture of who we are in the cosmos? We will learn more about nighttime wonders, and how to appreciate the beckoning sky. We meet tonight at 6 p.m., at the home of Bob and Julie Grazian, 825 10th Street. Another chance to “marvel!”

THE FIRST TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 146

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves, and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in one body of Christ, the church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Amen.

*THEHYMN RESPONSE Paul E. Hoffman

There is nothing in the heav’ns above, nor in hidden depths of earth

that can keep the Savior’s love from us,

for by his sinless death God’s Son has conquered ev’ry foe.

There is nothing left to fear. For God’s love, God’s love is always near.
