JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Maintenance Services Officer to provide an efficient, cost effective, customer orientated maintenance service. As a member of the maintenance services multi-skilled team this role supports construction activities through site labouring, as well as carrying out simple joinery, building and plumbing tasks as directed.

Working flexibly across all of the University estate, the postholder will also be responsible for construction waste segregation, ordering of stock items and handling of materials deliveries, and will have some responsibility for ensuring construction site safety, including workshop and plant room safety and cleanliness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Assist with joinery, building, decorating and plumbing work, utilising a range of skills including:

  • Simple first and second fix refurbishment tasks;
  • Repairs to existing furniture, fixtures and fittings;
  • Simple general building and decorating tasks;
  • Simple plumbing repairs and drain clearance;
  • Compliance checks of emergency lighting, fire doors, and various other systems.

2) Safe use of power tools, drainage equipment, access equipment and erection of scaffolding.

3) Compliance with safety regulations and good practice as directed.

4) Work flexibly in a multi-skilled capacity across trades within your personal skill base.

5) Assist with the construction activities of the team by undertaking:

  • Site labouring and general site cleaning;
  • Waste segregation in accordance with site waste management plans;
  • Coordinating materials deliveries and storage;
  • Ensuring site safety as directed;
  • Ordering or collection of stock items as directed.

Experience of working on new and old buildings, including listed buildings.
Ability to work at height using Mobile Elevating Work Platform (Genie Hoist), scaffolding and ladders.
Experience of using a range of power tools safely
Experience of working on construction sites
Ability to source and procure own materials for work with relevant audit trail.
Ability to produce high quality work within a given timescale.
Knowledge and understanding of basic Health & Safety practices, including manual handling and the selection and use of personal protective equipment. / D
