POST Carpentry and Joinery - Technician

REPORTS TO Curriculum Manager

OVERALL

PURPOSE To provide technical and practical support services in the Carpentry department. This will include the preparation, maintenance and servicing of equipment, instruments and apparatus whilst ensuring consumable materials are prepared for sessions. To support the academic staff in the preparation and delivery of classroom activity.

1.  Main Duties

(Please note this may involve lifting and handling)

1.1  To maintain the stores, equipment such that they may be used effectively and safely by staff.

1.2  To prepare consumable materials, practical environments, apparatus and equipment for learner practical activities, training and lecture demonstrations.

1.3  Assist academic staff in accomplishing delivery of sessions and learning objectives.

1.4  Maintain accurate records and levels of resources, equipment, materials and consumable ordering replenishment stock as necessary liaising with staff and suppliers, issue and receipt stock, conduct monthly stock audit and annual stocktaking.

1.5  Organise and ensure effective operation and security of store areas, stock control, with particular regard to hazardous and inflammable materials and their safe storage.

1.6  Create and maintaining a database of suppliers and other appropriate contacts.

1.7  Assist with receipt of monies, recording of transactions and transfer of money to College Finance Office.

1.8  Keep all areas clean, tidy and safe to ensure adequate care of Health and Safety and take immediate action (i.e disconnection of power supply) if there is a reason to suppose a safety hazard exists and report the hazard immediately.

1.9  Maintain kitchen/laundry environment. PPE/student locker areas.

1.10  Completion of risk assessment & COSHH for all areas ensuring practical areas are updated with H & S posters and code of conduct etc.

1.11  You may be required to work evenings and Saturdays. This will be subject to agreement with your Line Manager.

1.12  Supervision of learners in practical areas ensuring staff/student ratios are as per Risk Assessments.

1.13  To be identified as a key holder where appropriate.

1.14  Complete all daily H & S/cleanliness checks are completed.

1.15 Ensure appropriate Budget spreadsheets are kept detailing costs of all equipment, consumables and resources are marked.

2.  Additional Duties

2.1  Undertake additional duties as required.

2.2  To take part in approved staff development as part of the Colleges Staff Development Programme.

2.3  To ensure the College Health & Safety procedures are adhered to and safe working practices are observed by you and others (including students for whom they are responsible.

2.4  You may be required to become a College First Aider and Fire Marshal. If so appropriate training will be given.

2.5  To promote the College ethos with regard to Equality and Diversity and act as a role model.

2.6 You may be required to act as a mentor and /or appraiser in the College schemes.

3.  Vocational Area Specification (Carpentry)

3.1  Ensure all equipment is maintained as per scheduled servicing and that documents are updated.

3.2  Storage areas to be kept clean/tidy and must conform to H & S.
