Description: Administrate a dynamic volunteer service organization for a national museum.

  • The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) will continually recruit, interview and orientate new volunteers from the community, implement recognition programs for volunteers and participate in training and credentialing volunteers at museum.
  • The VC will coordinate the youth volunteer program, coordinate volunteer assignments and seek volunteer support to meet professional staff needs.
  • The VC will maintain contact database, generate the electronically distributed volunteer newsletter and oversee and schedule quarterly volunteer meetings and lunch-time presentations.
  • The VC will maintain the volunteer handbook and assure accurate record keeping of volunteer service hours and efforts for report to Museum Director. The VC serves as a member of the Museum Development team, is the primary staff contact for the 450 volunteers at the museum, and is responsible for managing the docent program and mentoring museum staff on how to work with volunteers.
  • The VC is also in charge of making reservations for group tours.
  • The VC is responsible for confirmation and invoicing all group tours and processing all museum guests’ customer feedback.
  • Organizes, coordinates and manages two large scale annual recognition events for volunteers including the award & recognition program for each.
  • Works with the Education Department in teaching during Discover STEM Week and Nuclear Science Week and may on occasion help with big field trips.

Requirements: The Volunteer Coordinator will possess a high degree of interpersonal skills, be capable of relating to and motivating adults and teens and be effective at problem solving for this diverse group. Comfort with public speaking and presentation as a recruitment tool is desired. Needs to have the ability to teach adults, a willingness to work interdepartmentally with flexibility and attention to detail. The VC should possess a bachelor’s degree and ideally have some experience in administration of volunteer service groups, cold calling and direct marketing, outreach and event planning. Experience in museumsetting a plus. The VC must be very well organized, self-directed and motivated. Ability to administrate several concurrent projects is required. Requires flexibility of work hours and may include evenings and occasional weekend duty. The VC should be knowledgeable of good customer service practices, oriented to education and possess an interest and curiosity in science, history and technology subjects.

In existence for 42 49years, the museum is operated by a not-for-profit organization and presents unique exhibits and programs to persons of all ages with emphasis on STEM education.

Salary and Benefits: This full time hourlyprofessional position is supported by major medical and additional benefits. Pay is commensurate with experience.
