High school diploma/GED. LPN program that is State Board-approved or college credits at a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or an LPN program at a state approved vocational institution).

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Demonstrates leadership and support of fellow personnel in implementation of overall school health program
  • Establishes and implements an improvement process for delivery of school health program
  • Promotes positive pupil-teacher-nurse-parent-community relationship
  • Maintains professional work habits
  • Maintains and upgrades his/her professional skills
  • Assists with sweep screening as available
  • Completes evaluations as requested by the School Assistance Team (SAT)
  • Attends Eligibility Committee (EC) meetings and Individual Education Plan Committee (IEP) meetings relative to health issues
  • Develops and implements the Health Care Plans for Special Education students identified as having a chronic health condition
  • Writes the health concerns component of the IEP
  • Acts as liaison between school, physician and other health care providers
  • Organizes and provides for the instruction of (with assistance from other qualified instructors) American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Keeps records on Standard First Aid and CPR training for personnel
  • Requests, purchases and stocks supplies as appropriate for students with special needs

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA FOR NURSES (Based on State Board Policy 5310):

  • Functions as contributing member of school staff
  • Exhibits knowledge of school law/policy
  • Exhibits knowledge of total school program
  • Acts as a liaison between schools and the medical community
  • Establishes and maintains adequate health records, such as but not limited to HCP
  • Conducts student/parent/teacher conferences when necessary
  • Coordinates, refers and follow-up as necessary
  • Collaborates with school staff concerning psychosocial and behavioral needs of students
  • Periodically reviews health status of students and shares with appropriate staff
  • Collects and reports data for School Nurse Needs Assessment/Survey
  • Manages student health records on WVEIS (Immunizations, Electron Health Data Care Plans, etc.)
  • Assists in assessment and placement of students with exceptional needs
  • Assists parent/student in using appropriate community resources
  • Assesses signs/symptoms of communicable disease
  • Implements and enforces communicable disease policies in collaboration with public health department
  • Contacts parent/teacher regarding communicable disease protocols
  • Assesses the severity of injuries and performs CPR and First Aid procedures as indicated
  • Assesses the severity of illness and acts appropriately
  • Coordinates and/or conducts training of school personnel
  • Serves as health education resource person
  • Supports and promotes health education
  • Maintains current West Virginia licensure
  • Enhances education through staff development and continuing education
  • Has knowledge of Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedure Manual for West Virginia Public Schools
  • Has knowledge of county and school health policies and procedures
  • Knows the procedure for referral to community agencies and medical facilities and refers as needed
  • Acknowledges the benefit of affiliation with professional organizations
