Job Description

Position Title: Lifeguard I Status: P/T (Non-Exempt)

Supervisor: Aquatic Director Department: Aquatics

General Function:

Under supervision of the Aquatics Director or Pool supervisor and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, The Lifeguard is responsible for supervision of swimmers during recreational and fitness swims; administers First Aid, exercises control of the swimmers and maintains all safety and sanitation procedure’s according to the policies of the Upper Palmetto Aquatics Departments and State Swimming Pool Operations Codes. The Lifeguard will assist the Aquatic Director with various branch activities such as special events, and other activities that occur on various occasions.

Know How:

·  Must be at least 16 years old

·  Must have a current Red Cross Lifeguarding or YMCA Lifeguarding Certification

·  Current certification in the following…

Professional CPR,

o  First Aid,

o  AED,

o  O2

·  Must present a professional, mature image, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills.

·  Must have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the Upper Palmetto YMCA.

Physical Requirements:

·  Walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (25 pounds), pushing, kneeling, standing and speaking

·  Must be able to accomplish the following…

o  Remaining alert, with no lapses of consciousness

o  Sit for extended periods including in an elevated chair

o  Communicate with others immediately when responding to an emergency

o  Hear noises and distress signals

o  Observe all assigned areas of the pool or water park

o  Preform all needed rescues, resuscitation and survival skills

o  Think in abstract, solve problems, make quick decisions

o  Have adequate memory skills

o  Act swiftly in an emergency

Principle Activities:

·  Responsible for the safety of facility patrons

·  Maintains a constant surveillance of the pool area

·  Enforces all of the facility’s policies, rules and regulations

·  Responds to patron inquiries and concerns as well as provides branch information as needed

·  Inspects the aquatic facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisor.

·  Completes record and reports regarding the following…

o  Patron attendance

o  Water chemistry

o  Incidents and accidents

·  Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff

·  Participate in all staff meetings and in-service trainings

·  Conduct aquatic facility maintenance as assigned

·  Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Effect on End Result:

Each lifeguard will be evaluated based on the degree to which:

·  Pool area is maintained in a safe, clean, well-supervised manner that welcomes participation

·  Member and program participants evaluations reflect satisfaction

·  Team work is promoted and demonstrated

·  Members and patrons are well informed of aquatics programs, rules and regulations
