POSITION TITLE: Director of Development and Marketing

Openhouse seeks an experienced development leader who will champion the expansion of our funding base. This individual will develop programs that reach individual donors, foundations and corporate sponsors in order to ensure long-term financial sustainability for the organization as we continue to grow our capacity to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Director of Development and Marketing reports directly to the Executive Director and serves as part of the senior management team.

ABOUT OPENHOUSE: Openhouse was founded in 1998 to enable LGBT seniors to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing LGBT-welcoming housing, impactful direct services, and innovative community programs. As a result, Openhouse reduces isolation and empowers LGBT seniors to improve their overall health, well-being, and economic security. As the initiator of the movement to meet the needs of LGBT older adults in San Francisco over a decade ago, Openhouse is today a dynamic and entrepreneurial organization on the leading edge of this growing field at the local, state and national levels.

DEVELOPMENT NEEDS: In order to achieve our growth goals, Openhouse seeks a creative and dynamic Director of Development and Marketing to plan and implement strategies to significantly increase our operating budget over a 3 – 5 year period. Openhouse has a diversified funding stream that includes individual giving, foundation support, corporate sponsorships, an annual fundraising event and government contracts. Openhouse needs to implement new funding strategies to expand our donor base in all categories, with particular attention on individual and institutional philanthropy.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Development and Marketing will be an innovative, energetic and thoughtful individual who is equal to the challenge of growing a small, ambitious and dynamic organization into a full service institution able to meet its short and long term goals with a secure, adequately sized funding base. The individual in the position will provide the overall leadership, direction, coordination and vision for all fundraising and marketing activities of Openhouse with particular attention to growing the number of donors, foundations and corporate sponsors and deepening the engagement of existing individual and institutional donors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fund Development

  1. Create and implement a multi-year plan to acquire new donors and strengthen the organization’s individual, foundation, planned giving and corporate philanthropy portfolios;
  2. Manage a cultivation and stewardship program with existing and potential major donors to ensure long-term financial sustainability;
  3. Coordinate and manage annual fundraising gala and other fundraising events as developed;
  4. Coordinate and engage with Executive Director, Board, volunteers and program staff to create a culture and awareness of fundraising throughout the organization;
  5. Plan, coordinate and manage direct mail, online and special event funding drives;
  6. Write content and oversee production of Openhouse newsletters and promotional materials;
  7. Write content for and make effective use of Openhouse website and social marketing tools to increase organizational visibility, improve communications with stakeholders and enhance giving.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE: The Director of Development and Marketing should have the following type of experience and qualifications:

  1. A record of success in raising major gifts from individuals and institutions;
  2. Broad-based knowledge of and experience with various development activities, ideally including relationship-based philanthropy, events, and planned giving;
  3. Broad-based knowledge of and experience with other fundraising and marketing strategies, ideally including telemarketing, direct mail and social media;
  4. Experience with database-driven development and donor recognition programs;
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of an Executive Director, staff members, board and volunteers;
  6. Proven ability as a team builder and motivator;
  7. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to vary communication style to meet the need of the audience;
  8. At least 5 years professional fundraising experience; at least one year in a senior management capacity; and
  9. A minimum Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

  3. Intrepid yet tactful; determined yet respectful of others’ concerns; someone with the flexibility and creativity needed to find alternative ways to reach funding objectives when barriers arise; a skilled negotiator who does not drive himself/herself or others into a corner;
  4. A hard worker with a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands-on in building and executing a variety of activities; and
  5. Emotionally mature with a very good sense of humor.
