Position overview
This position is responsible for the delivery of approved Vocational Education and Training programs; teaching, student assessment, maintenance of student files, liaison with other training staff and monitoring of student learning outcomes in accordance with curriculum guidelines of Batchelor Institute, the Faculty of Health, Business and Science and National VET Regulator (NVR) standards; development of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities. Liaison with remote Aboriginal communities and with industry partners is required; travel and working throughout the Northern Territory is an essential requirement of the position.
Detailed Statement of Duties
1. Delivery of conservation and land management and horticulture training courses at both remote Indigenous Australian communities and campus/annexe based as required. This includes lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, work experience and student field excursions, in styles appropriate to the client group and flexible delivery strategies.
2. Preparation of training programs, enrolment forms and associated resources required for the effective and efficient delivery of training.
3. Development of appropriate teaching materials which address clients’ learning needs. In particular, specialist technical knowledge and input into the development of a workplace English language, literacy and numeracy programs.
4. Development of Training and Assessment Strategies and associated Assessment Packages (Unit analyses and assessment tools).
5. Conduct and / or organise workplace assessment as required.
6. Maintain all student and apprentice records and files as required; report progression of students to the Faculty.
7. Undertake the basic administrative tasks required of all Batchelor Institute staff in relation to course delivery including learner and employer surveys.
8. Advise students on and document assessments of student competency according to the Institute’s Academic Rules, Faculty of Health, Business and Science policy and NVR.
9. Consult and counsel students on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action
10. Participate in curriculum review, research and/or fee-based activities.
11. Undertake and maintain personal professional development and industry skills currency.
12. Attend Faculty/Institute and team/department meetings as required.
13. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation as directed.
Essential selection criteria
1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to four (4) year’s higher education relevant to teaching, and/or a qualification in Conservation and Land Management and/or Horticulture and/or four (4) years’ experience relevant to this position.
2. Eligible for registration in a professional organisation within the field of Conservation and Land Management and/or Horticulture, if appropriate.
3. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) or Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training (AWPT) for VET sector or Graduate Certificate in Higher Education sector. Is this still worded correctly?
4. Significant relevant experience preferably within indigenous Australian communities and/or organisations.
5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and to communicate sensitively and effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members.
6. Proven capacity to work effectively with others in a culturally diverse team, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision.
7. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course/unit coordination and teaching with limited resources at a community level and to initiate and develop culturally appropriate curriculum teaching resources in Conservation and Land Management, and evaluate their effectiveness.
8. Computer skills to the level to support operating in this position.
9. Demonstrated capacity to undertake research and other professional development activities.
10. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult indigenous Australian students enrolled in Conservation and Land Management and/or Horticulture courses, with good organisational and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.
11. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory C class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.

Desirable selection criteria
1. Qualifications in English as a second language or adult education qualifications.
2. Ability to speak an Indigenous language.

Special features of this position
· Deliver training remotely on site in Aboriginal communities which requires travel by sea, air (large and small craft) and 4x4 vehicles.
