POSITION: Minobimaadiziiwin Gitigaanin Tribal Farm Summer Technician(Paid Internship)
LOCATION: Minobimaadiziiwin Gitigaanin Red Cliff Tribal Farm, on State Hwy 13 - 5 miles north of Bayfield, WI.
PAY RATE: $10/hr, 40 hours/week from May 30th – August 31st
SUPERVISORS: Farm Manager/Food Systems Coordinator and Treaty Natural Resources Administrator
POSITION SUMMARY: Thetechnician/intern will support the Red Cliff Tribal Farm in daily functions of the farm (planting, weeding, watering, mulching) as well as implementing the first phase of our five-year comprehensive Farm Management Plan. The Summer Technician will gain first-hand knowledge of how to grow annual vegetable crops, assess the health of the farm ecosystem, and how to implement ecological solutions to challenges/opportunities as they arise. Minobimaadiziiwin Gitigaanin is striving to create an integrated farm ecosystem using Traditional Ecological Knowledge as well as best practices of organic farm management. Minobimaadiziiwin Gitigaanin seeks to improve tribal access to locally-produced, nutritional foods by growing it right here on the reservation and engaging the Red Cliff community through classes and community events.
POSITIONEXPECTATIONS:
- Assist in farm functions such as planting, weeding, mulching, and watering as needed (55%)
- Feed, move, and care for the tribe’s livestock (15%)
- Assist with farm recordkeeping (crop yields, planting/harvesting dates, phenology, crop rotations, disease/pest incidences, etc.) (10%)
- Assist in youth garden programming (5%)
- Help coordinate a farmer’s market stand to sell surplus farm produce (5%)
- With the assistance of the Farm Manager, the summer technician will choose a farm project to undertake for the 2016 summer season (5%)
- With the assistance of the Farm Manager, the summer technician will organize a community workshop to utilize and share surplus farm produce (5%)
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: Farm experience strongly preferred. Candidates seeking degrees inSustainable Community Development, Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Humanity and Nature Studies, Ecological Restoration, Native American Studies, Natural Resources or other related fields preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS:Applicant must be an enrolled student at Northland College. Must be able to work outside for long periods of time in various weather conditions.Needs to be able to self-direct, have good communication skills, both oral and written, and have the ability and desire to collaborate and engage with the tribal community and multiple partners. This is a physically demanding job and the applicant will need to be able to lift 50lbs and work on their feet for hours at a time.
