Basic Function: (Purpose of the Position)

The Welding Engineer is responsible for the safe and cost effective development and maintenance of the welding procedures, programs and processes for welding of couplings and other HES products,and the tracking of the welding department production performance.

Position Responsibilities and Specific Duties:

1.  Development

·  Organizes and plans the development of welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welding programs for the automated welding systems, with established timelines for each development.

·  Writes and assists in the development of WPS’s to accommodate new requirements from customers. Manage all documents associated with WPS development per company quality management system.

·  Records and reports progress on development initiatives and plans.

·  Creates and maintains a list of approved programs for the automated welding systems. Regular distribution of this list to Engineering is required to assist in new product development.

·  Ensures all programs for automated welding systems have all critical documents developed and approved prior to release of profiles to production. All modifications to welding profiles and setup sheets will be required to follow the approved revision control per company quality management system.

·  Manages the filing and maintenance of all development files including but not limited to NDE information and films, Macro examinations, set up sheets and development metrics.

·  Participates in and supports new product development by attending and participating in the engineering design reviews.

2.  Production

·  Ensures personnel are trained and understand the demands and the flow of the welding process.

·  Maintains effective tracking charts and tools, which accurately reflect the performance of each work center and employee.

·  Ensures programs used on the machines are kept up to date to the latest revision and are available on a timely basis to support existing product and new product designs.

·  Tracks and maintains welder continuity and performance records for each welder.

·  Assist in the development of production processes and process controls to ensure the integrity of production welds.

3.  Training

·  Develops cross departmental training plans ensuring each employee involved in the welding of products can perform their assigned responsibilities in a safe and cost effective manner.

·  Establishes training programs where each employee maximizes growth and career development opportunities by developing and improving their depth of knowledge and experience.

·  Develops training and skills assessment charts and metrics, which clearly identifies the skill level of every employee in the department.

·  Establishes cross training programs in the department which improves the depth of the department, provides a variety of job function for employees and reduces the risk lost production due to absenteeism.

4.  Metrics and Measurement

·  Strives to reach and maintain fist pass yield of 99% on automated welding and 98% on manual welding within a 45-hour workweek, minimizing overtime and constantly improving the production process.

·  Is part of and supports the companies scrap reduction programs reducing weld failures to less than 1 percent of total weldments produced.

·  Ensured required equipment preventive maintenance program goals are met each month. Develops the implementation and tracking tools to effectively monitor the preventive maintenance program.

5.  ERP System Utilization

·  Understands and uses the tools available in our ERP system to process jobs in an accurate manner.

·  Ensures processes and procedures specific for welding department are developed and documented to the standard identified by the company quality management system.

·  Complete all responsibilities in a timely and professional manner while maintaining quality and confidentiality.

·  Participates in implementing Company strategic plan goals, quality program initiatives, lean manufacturing techniques, good housekeeping practices, corrective action implementation, quick changeover initiatives and other company-wide initiatives aimed at improving productivity and increasing profitability.

·  Participate in and support the Company’s professional development and training activities.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities necessary to meet the minimum job requirements of this position.

·  Education –

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: A College degree in manufacturing operations, engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification and or equivalent experience welding on automated systems or robotic welding. Certification or equivalent experience as a weld Engineer.

·  Work Experience – Minimum of 5 years experience in a weld manufacturing environment. Must have experience in both manual and automated GTAW with high strength alloys. Must have strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize assignments. Understanding of ERP software and a demonstrated understanding of the MS-Office Suite of productivity tools a plus. Minimum of 5 years experience in welding leadership roles with demonstrated success in achieving production goals is a plus.

·  Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from vendors; regulatory agencies; or members of the management.

·  Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of Accounting and General Business Acumen. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

·  Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

·  Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Project Management software; Manufacturing software, Contact Management systems, Financial and Costing Systems.
