POSITION DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES (Part-Time Exempt)

PURPOSE: To lead, develop, coordinate, and administer a diverse 12-month ministry of choral, vocal, and instrumental music to support the worship life of the congregation.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Director of Music Ministries reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff. The Organist/Accompanist reports to the Director of Music Ministries. The Director of Music Ministries oversees all independent contractors serving in the music ministry.

WORK WEEK: This position is for an average of 20 hours per week, with active presence on site at least two days a week including a midweek rehearsal day and all worship services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversee the entire music ministry of Southminster Presbyterian Church. This includes directing the adult vocal choir and the bell choiras well as overseeing the work of the Reconnect Worship Team, the children’s choir, and any other musical ensembles that may be created.
  1. Actively pursue musical excellence, numerical growth, and diversity in all the music ministries of the Church including both the existing choirs and additional musical ensembles as they are created.
  1. Encourage spiritual growth among music ministry participants and help them develop an identity as worship leaders and servants of the larger Church.
  1. Develop diverse new musical ensembles to lead music at services for which the choir is not singing. (This includes summer services.)
  1. Recruit and direct paid section leaders; seek to recruit volunteer musicians from beyond our existing congregation; arrange for guest musicians as needed.
  1. Work with the Pastors and other worship leaders to provide music that is thematically integrated with the sermon and appropriate to the liturgical season.
  1. Coordinate music for special services including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, and other special services that may be developed.
  1. Attend regular staff meetings and communicate regularly and clearly with other Church staff, working collegially with them and paying special attention to relationships within the music and worship ministry.
  1. Provide for the maintenance and development of the music library with a diverse selection of musical styles. Enter music into any database as may exist or may be created.
  1. Attend monthly Worship Committee meetings.
  1. Provide input for budgetary planning.
  1. Arrange with the Worship Committee for the short- and long-term care and maintenance of Church-owned musical instruments and music-related items (e.g., choir robes).
  1. Provide musical guidance for other ministries of the Church as requested and available.
  1. Complete other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Has a strong Christian commitment and views music as a ministry.
  • Holds a degree in music from a college or from a conservatory of music or demonstrates equivalent experience.
  • Possesses demonstrated conducting, accompanying, and teaching skills in choral and instrumental ensembles, using a variety of musical styles so that participants and Church members may experience and enjoy musical and spiritual development.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

RELATIONSHIPS: The Director of Music Ministries is a member of and relates to the staff, especially the Pastor/Head of Staff, and works closely with the Worship Committee and music-related subcommittees. The Director of Music Ministries supervises the Organist/Accompanist.

EVALUATION: Performance evaluation and salary review will be conducted annually by the Pastor/Head of Staff with participation by a member of the Personnel Committee if requested by either party.
