Village Market Prepared Foods Manager

Position Summary:
Village Market is a community-designed and operated, healthy corner grocery store in the heart of New Columbia in North Portland. As part of the Village Gardens program, Village Market is intended to build community, promote health, offer fresh, healthy, sustainably raised foods, and inspire a sense of hope for the neighborhood.
The Prepared Foods Manager is a full-time position responsible for overall daily operations of the Village Market Deli/prepared foods department. This includes staff supervision and scheduling; merchandising, production, product and inventory management; assuring expenditures are within established budget limits; and monitoring sales and margin targets, making any resultant recommendations for change. This position is responsible for monitoring profit and loss for the deli/prepared foods department and promptly reporting when profit/loss is outside of expected limits. The position is also responsible for assuring the deli/prepared food department operates in compliance with all State and local safety and health regulations and assuring the kitchen is clean and orderly. This position works closely with other Village Gardens staff to support a thriving volunteer and community engagement process at the store and works in partnership with other Agency staff, including administrative staff, and to assure operations are in compliance with the Agency’s policies and procedures.
Education and Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in customer and community relations, kitchen, restaurant, prepared foods departments, grocery or retail store management. A typical background for the person who can fulfill the duties of this position is as follows:
- Experience demonstrating the successful management of a kitchen operation, and/or a prepared foods department within a larger store. Direct deli/prepared foods management preferred.
- Experience in hiring and providing staff supervision, including monitoring performance standards and addressing concerns, as needed.
- Experience managing expenditures within established budgets and making sound sales projections
- Experience with kitchen/prepared foods processes – purchasing, pricing, inventory management, marketing, scales, merchandising, and point-of-sale systems
- Familiarity with the urban agriculture and healthy corner store movements
- Experience demonstrating an understanding of the cultural traditions, norms and histories of low-income, urban African American, Latino, and African Immigrant communities sufficient to build effective relationships. Personal life experience will be valued.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Ability to understand and utilize prepared financial/budget statements to assess and monitor sales, inventory, and margin management.

- Ability to develop strong relationships with vendors, customers, and community partners
- Ability to create an inviting, friendly atmosphere and a satisfying shopping experience for customers
- Ability to manage staffing levels in accordance with program budget, and recruit, select, and train quality staff
- Ability to create a motivating work environment
- Knowledge of the neighborhood and its diverse cultural groups.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals, including customers, co-workers, vendors, etc. Multi-lingual skills preferred.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions.
- Ability to exercise tact, discretion and judgment in working with a variety of people.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Openness to feedback and supervision.
- Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with all the various deli products sold in the department including recommended uses and cooking methods or demonstrate the ability to learn this information.
- Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets or exceeds the standards for productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony and safety at Village Market.
- Ability to consistently attend and be punctual for work commitments and be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities of position.
- Manual/physical dexterity allowing for performance of routine office functions such as phone use, computer use, filing, and copying.
- Manual/physical capability to lift items overhead (stock shelves), bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and lift in order to perform functions considered routine if working within a grocery store environment.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
Additional Requirements:
- Must pass criminal history background check
- Must have and be able to maintain a valid food handlers certificate
- The position requires a personal vehicle permitting occasional travel within the Portland metropolitan area sufficient for transporting supplies or to attend meetings. A valid driver’s license for state of residency, a driving record meeting the Agency’s liability insurance criteria, and personal auto liability coverage ($100,000/$300,000 levels strongly recommended) are required. All employees who drive for work purposes, regardless of whether driving a personal or Janus vehicle, and regardless of whether driving with or without clients, must complete the agency’s driving approval process before driving for work purposes.
- Serve Safe Certification required.
- Standard CPR and FIRST AID Certification Required
Salary/Benefits:Salary Range is $12-14/hour; excellent benefits including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, EAP, 401(k) and paid time off. Voluntary optional coverages also available. Benefit programs have varied eligibility waiting periods depending on benefit plan.
