  • This is a full-time position.
  • Employment is with Chattahoochee Technical College and not with an individual campus. All employees are subject to work relocation based on college needs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for supervising, the Campus Police Department’s day-to-day activities of assigned officers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Seven years of paid work experience in public law enforcement.
  • Must be Georgia POST certified and be in good standing.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle

or equipment operated.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supervising, the Campus Police Department’s day-to-day activities of assigned officers.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Provides for the safety and security of students, staff, faculty, administrators, visitors and property of Chattahoochee Technical College.
  • Assigns and plans the activities of the Campus Police Department’s day-to-day activities of assigned officers to meet the safety and security requirements of the college.
  • Monitors and supervises the activities of personnel to ensure compliance with technical college rules and regulations, state and federal laws, and court directives.
  • Interprets and applies state and federal rules, regulations, policies, and legislation as they apply to campus police and security operations.
  • Assists superior officers in consulting with to the administration in areas of Georgia Criminal Law and procedures; advises concerning the feasibility and appropriateness of seeking prosecution for given activities.
  • Assists superior officers in preparing and recommending for approval accurate and complete budget information within an established time frame.
  • Ensures that short- and long-term goals for the department are accomplished and implements plans to reach these goals; monitors the activities of the department in efforts to reach these goals.
  • Prepares and submits reports to meet federal, state, system and college level requirements as directed.
  • Maintains certifications as necessary to meet state requirements.
  • Maintains officer staffing levels at various campuses.
  • Reviews all reports, time card sheets, and payroll information for campus officers.
  • Provides advice concerning appropriate law enforcement response to incidents and violations of the law.
  • Completes activity reports on an established basis; evaluates contents for completeness, accountability, neatness and compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Maintains and submits weekly, monthly and annual reports.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day operations of campus officers.
  • Perform the evaluations of the officers assigned to them.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Directs the inspection and maintenance of fire alarms, security systems and fire extinguishers.
  • Trains newly assigned officers in the daily operations of the DPS precinct office where they are assigned including the proper and timely submission of required reports, some of which are computer based and require checking and approval before submission.
  • Assists in the scheduling and performance of training for officers in tactical operations and the use of police equipment.
  • Maintains and tracks the inventory of department equipment and supplies and issue such items as needed to the different department locations.
  • Acts as first level supervisor of all officers below the rank of Sergeant, reviewing all request for absences and arranging the scheduling of a temporary replacement while junior officers are absent.
  • Fills the position of any junior officer as the need arises on any campus especially when there is little or no notice given.
  • Maintains records on all department vehicles, requesting maintenance as needed. Maintaining the emergency equipment inventory of each vehicle and replacing as necessary.
  • Supervises the inspection of fire equipment and AEDs providing the Director of Public Safety detailed accounting of the condition of such equipment and the measures necessary to maintain its readiness.
  • Maintains a strong relationship with all subordinates allowing for the solution of minor problems through a thorough understanding of the junior officer’s needs, personalities and level of performance and advising senior officers when appropriate.
  • Advises senior officers on the day to day operations of the field offices so as to preclude any unexpected problems.
  • Acts in emergencies as the distributor and tracker of emergency equipment to field teams as directed by the Chief of Police and/or responding emergency personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Sergeant assigns work in terms of shift goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through reports and observation of subordinate activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include federal, state and local law and college rules and regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied duties in operation of college security. Unexpected and emergency situations contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to supervise subordinate officers. Success in this position contributes to a safe campus environment.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with administrators, students, faculty, staff, and representatives of other law enforcement agencies, local business and community leaders, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to motivate or influence persons, to resolve problems, or to justify, defend or negotiate matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
  • The work requires the use of specialized protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over allCampus Police and Security Personnel assigned to his or her area and shift.
