POSITION: 17-0565 Museum Technician Hiring Rate: $14.50/hr

Division:Museum Temporary – No Benefits

Department: Community Services 40 hrs/wk for the first 4-5 mos., then 20 hrs/wk,No weekends

DEFINITION:Under the supervision of the Curator of History, assist with the relocation of the Longmont Museum’s collections from a rented warehouse to a new off-site storage facility. Position performs a wide variety of museum support work and technical collections tasks related to such activities as inventorying of object collections, re-housing or unpacking objects according to conservationally approved techniques, documentation, record keeping and data entry; assists Curator and Registrar with specific collections functions related to cataloging, inventory, documentation, and data entry, and to do related work as required. Position is grant-funded for 12-19months; expected start date is mid-January2018.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Generate appropriate and accurate documentation related to collections recordkeeping. Work with moving company and other Museum staff to accomplish safe and efficient move of the Museum’s collection to new facility. Understand and implement proper cataloging procedures. Re-house collections according to accepted, conservationally sound methods. May also pack artifacts for relocation. Prepare physical descriptions of objects following correct cataloging procedures. Enter or update object location data on computer. Prepare descriptions of artifacts following correct processing procedures. Inventory artifact collections, either alone or in a team with another staff member or a volunteer.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Work is partially performed in a standard office environment. This portion of work requires vision sufficient to review records and enter data on personal computer with keyboard. Close-up work required to read small print, patent dates, maker’s mark, etc. on various surfaces and objects. Job may entail data entry for extended periods of time, requiring repetitive motion. Must be able to communicate and work effectively with co-workers and volunteers. Must be able to recognize and correct discrepancies in records and documents. Must be able to work with little supervision or sometimes alone. Work is partially performed in collections storage areas. This portion of work requires repetitive carrying and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work requires climbing stairs and ladders, using dollies to move objects and occasional use of hand and power tools. Access to some storage areas requires negotiating steps and ramps. While standing on floor or ladder, objects may be lifted above head. Some chemicals and cleaning solvents may be used.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, History, Anthropology or related field plus two years of professional curatorial training and experience, with emphasis in collections care and management. A Master’s Degree in Museum Studies, History or American Studies or related field is desirable. Experience with major museum collections moves is a plus.
