CLASS OBJECTIVES:

1. To learn self discipline, self confidence and dedication through dance using the body as

an expressive instrument.

2. To explore different dance styles, including jazz, ballet, hip hop, social, modern, folk and tap, and various

techniques through various exercises in movement.

3. To develop a dance vocabulary.

  1. To increase rhythmic ability.

The most important factor in this class is participation and a willingness to TRY!!!

GRADING POLICIES:

Daily Grades: 40% of the student’s grade (worksheets, quizzes, journal, dressing out)

-A daily grade will be given each class day for dressing out and participating. Students start out with 100 each class day. Deductions for each daily grade will be determined as follows:

  1. Talking excessively -20 points
  2. Failure to participate -100 points
  3. Attitude problem -40 points
  4. Late for roll call -10 points
  5. Tardy to class -10 points
  6. Partially dressing out -50 points
  7. Late turning in items -10 each day
  8. Gum -10 points
  9. Jewelry -10 per piece

***IF A STUDENT DOES NOT DRESS OUT THEY WILL RECEIVE A ZERO AS THEIR DAILY GRADE.

***ON THE FOURTH OFFENSE OF NOT DRESSING OUT, STUDENTS WILL BE SENT TO THE OFFICE WITH A REFERRAL.

Major Grades:60% of the student’s grade (movement tests, written exams)

BINDER CHECK/DANCE JOURNALS

Students are required to keep a binder in dance class. Each student will need a 1” binder and a set of divider tabs. Please label in the following order: Calendar, Journals, Graded Work, Articles, and Home work.

Binder checks will take place every 3 weeks and will be counted as a daily grade. There will be 3 binder checks within each 9 week period.

ATTENDANCE/TARDIES:
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of each student. Each student is responsible for getting/making up all assignments that they missed while they were absent.

The student must be inside the room when the tardy bell rings or they will receive a tardy. They will also receive a tardy if they are not dressed and in their roll call line in the specified time given.Once a student has received 3 tardies they will receive an office referral.

***Each student is expected to be dressed and in their roll call lines 8 minutes after the bell rings.

INJURED OR ILL:
Students are graded on daily participation. Any student unable to participate for the day must bring a note from home containing the date, parent’s home and/or work number, and signature of parent. This note is good for one day only. You will be excused from activity, but you are still required to dress out and take notes on what the class is doing that day. Extended non-activity (more than one class day) will require a doctor’s note.

DRESSING OUT:

Students are expected to dress out dailyin appropriate clothing, unless otherwise instructed. This will include:

*PHS DANCE SHIRT (You will purchase this from me)

*BLACK DANCE BOTTOMS (black dance pants, capri pants or Bermuda short)

*JAZZ SHOES (You will purchase these through me)

Hair must be pulled away from your face (ponytails, braids, buns, etc.)

No jewelry can be worn (studs, rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and all other accessories are included)

No gum, food, drinks or candy

CLASS UNIFORM FEE:

The class uniform fee is$50.00. The class uniform will be worn each class day and consists of a class t-shirt, dance bottoms (you will get these yourself) and jazz shoes. The purchase of the class uniform is MANDATORY to be in dance class. IF YOU DO NOT DRESS OUT FOR DANCE, YOU WILL FAIL!

*When paying for these uniforms, if paying with a check, according to school policy it cannot be a temporary check. Each check must have the date of birth and driver’s license number of each person whose name appears on the check, written on the check.

LATE WORK PROCEDURES:

According to district policy, any late assignment will automatically be deducted 30 points with a 70 being the highest possible score. Each class day it is late after that it will be deducted an additional 10 points per class day. MEET ALL DEADLINES AND DUE DATES!

LOCKERS/LOCKS:
Each student will be assigned a dance locker. They are responsible to assure the locker is locked and all personal belongings are placed inside; therefore, the PHS Dance Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

SPRING SHOW:

In the spring semester, students are required to participate in the annual spring show. Performing in this show is a large part of their final grade in the class. There will be a few of extra practices required for this show. The students will be responsible for paying a costume fee of$60.00.Performing in this show is MANDATOTY.The date for the Spring Show is April 15-16 @ 7:00 pm at PHS Auditorium! There will be after school rehearsals on April 13-14th! Further information will be forthcoming.

  • NO GUM, FOOD, CANDY, OR DRINK IN DANCE ROOM OR LOCKER ROOM
  • DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM WITHOUT PERMISSION (INCLUDING THE LOCKER ROOM)
  • NO STREET SHOES ON DANCE ROOM FLOOR
  • DO NOT SIT DOWN DURING THE INSTRUCTIONAL TIME UNLESS SPECIFIED
