Policy for Dual/Second Master’s Degree Program

DUAL or Second Master’s Degree Programs between M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and in M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction

A “second master’s degree” is any master’s degree pursued after a first master’s degree is earned at NAU or another university.

Students may pursue a second master's degree at the NAU upon completion of the first master's degree or may pursue two separate master's degrees concurrently by meetingall requirements for the seconddegreewith the specific approval ofthe academic department/or graduate program coordinator.

Such approval will be given only when the following conditions are met:

1.  A complete admissions application packet for the second master’s degree and application fee submitted to theadmission office.

2.  The proposed second master’s degree must be in a different major field of study than the previous degree; (eitherM.Ed.in Educational Leadership (EDLE), M.Ed. in School Counseling (COUN) or M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (CUIN)).

3.  A degree plan submitted for the department chair’sapproval;

4.  Courses counted toward a previously earned master’s degreemaynot be applied to the second master’s degree unless they constitute specific course requirements for the major concentration in the second master’s degree program. In such cases, no more than15semester credit hours of such courses may be counted toward the second degree and must be included in the degree plan for the second master’s degree.

5.  Only courses with a grade of “B-” or better may be counted.

6.  Courses must be less than six (6) years old at the time the degree is awarded.
