PORTSMOUTH NAVAL GLIDING CLUB - GLIDING COURSE

12th –18th August 2006

INTRODUCTION

Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club will be providing a gliding course for ab initio or early solo students during the period Sat 12th Aug - Fri 18th Aug inclusive on DAEDALUS Airfield Lee-on-Solent. There will also be opportunity for local soaring and cross-country flying for club members throughout this period.

AIM

Instruct ab initio students in the art of flying gliders safely in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, and where possible award British Gliding Association Grade A Certificate.

ROUTINE

The course will commence with a briefing at the clubhouse at 9.00 am. Thereafter the daily routine will be:

8.30am Arrive at Gliding Hangar, DI gliders, aircraft and vehicles.

9.00amBriefing at hangar by Course Manager

4.30pmStart flying aircraft back to Hanger

6.00pmSecure Hanger by Duty Syndicate

COURSE PACKAGE: The course fee covers the following:

21 Air tows (6.5 hours of flying instruction (390 minutes)

Instruction by qualified BGA InstructorsOne year membership of PNGC

BGA Log Book and Record CardFlight Test for Solo Status where applicable

N.B: Cash refunds will not be given. Any outstanding flight at the end of the course will be held on the club accounting system; you will have the opportunity to use these flights should you wish to return. In addition you may apply for full annual membership at any time. Winch launches may be used during the course to help with circuit planning and landings. Three winch launches are equal to one air tow.

ORGANISATION

Course Manager – Mr Ben Bennett

The course Manager is responsible for all flying activities and training during the period of the course. He decides when a student can go solo and makes all major decisions during the course. He has a team of instructors to help him. In his absence the course deputy manager – Lt Richard Croker will take responsibility

The Course Administration Officer – Lt Richard Croker

Responsible for the administration, finance, organisation, discipline and all matters secretarial. Also acts as Liaison to FAAOA and DNR/AIB.

CFIAND DCFI

The Chief Flying Instructor is Tony WORLD and the Deputy Flying Instructor is John Hale. They are responsible to ensure the course runs in accordance with guidelines specified by the British Gliding Association

LOGGING OF FLIGHTS

Each syndicate must record their flights on a syndicate logging form. These forms are provided daily. The accurate logging of flights is essential as these figures are used to track glider hours and student flying hours. The flights recorded on these forms will be entered into the club computer at the end of each flying day. The information can be accessed easily and the club computer is available for course students to use.

VEHICLES AND TRACTORS

Private vehicles must be parked on the grass outside the peri-track. They must not be parked next to the launch point. Club vehicles and tractors are not to be driven by course students unless they have a full driving licence, a full briefing and the course manager’s permission.

FAA SQUADRON AIR EXPERIENCE FLYING

The Fleet Air Arm Squadron will provide air experience flying in powered aircraft for the Fleet Air Arm Officers Association Potential Officer Candidate students. This is done on an opportunity basis and is intended to give students practice in navigation and tactical evaluation. This will be over the weekend when we have only 4 Gliders available. This flying is not available to BRNC.

SYNDICATE LEADER

The starred member (*) of each flight is the syndicate leader. Their responsibilities are:

Ensure all flights are logged correctly and neatly

Hand the log sheets to Admin Officer or Deputy Manager daily

Ensure flight members get an equal share of flying

Know the whereabouts of syndicate members at all times

ACCOMMODATION:

Accommodation for service and scholarship personnel will be provided at the Wardroom HMS Collingwood for the duration of the course. The joining instructions for the course cover in more detail the joining times for the Wardroom and further information on accommodation. Packed lunches will be provided each day. Also transport to and from the wardroom will be provided. In addition a Fleet Air Arm Pilot S/Lt Chris Wittington RN will act as Logistics Manager to supervise transport arrangementsand wardroom liaison.
