COURSE PLAN
Rationale
Cincinnati Christian University is committed to preaching and committed to excellence in preaching. In order for preachers to faithfully proclaim God’s Word, they must be committed to expository preaching. Expository preaching is not just a form of preaching, rather it is the foundation upon which all faithful proclamation of God’s Word must be established regardless of the type or form or structure a sermon may take.
Objectives – By the end of this course you should be equipped to:

Assignments
1) Students will preach four sermons in class
- The sermons will be as follows:
- The first sermon will be from an assigned text
- The second sermon will be on an approved contemporary topic
- The third sermon will be on an approved Bible character
- The fourth sermon will be on an approved theological theme
- Requirements for each sermon are as follows:
- The sermon must be expository (as defined in class)
- For the class session before the date when sermons are due, students are required to submit a basic outline only to be used for class discussion purposes. This is an important part of the class and failure to have the big idea and main points ready will result in an automatic 5% reduction off the overall grade for the sermon.
- All sermons are due at the beginning of class on the first day of each preaching cycle. Failure to have a sermon ready will result in a ‘0’ for the assignment (which is 10% of the overall class grade).
- Each sermon must be typed as a manuscript outline (to be discussed in class). Students must demonstrate that they have thought through everything that is going to be said from the pulpit.
2) Each student will submit reading notes for each of the following 3 books (reading notes are thoughts/reflections/salient quotes from the book that the student found the most engaging/helpful/insightful/challenging/disagreeable, etc.):
- Exegetical Fallacies, D.A. Carson
- Preaching and the Literary Forms of the Bible, Thomas G. Long
- Christ-Centered Preaching, Bryan Chapell
- Each report must be accompanied by a statement of reading (see attached)
Grading
Sermon 1 20% (5% for discussion outline and 15% for full outline and delivery)
Sermon 2 20% (same as above)
Sermon 3 20% (same as above)
