PLTW FLIGHT AND SPACE

Dear students and parents,

This letter is to welcome you to the PLTW Flight and SPACE at Wright STEAM Magnet, and to inform you of the course and the expectations that your child will be following throughout the year.

Course Details:

PLTW is the nation's leading science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) solution in over 5,000 schools across the U.S. PLTW FLIGHT and SPACE is an exciting project based course which covers the following modules : 4.1 History of Flight and Space, 4.2 Aeronautics, 4.3 Travelling and Living in Space.

PLTW Flight and Space, is a one semester course. Students will learn about careers in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, The History of Flight and Space, Aeronautics; where students will build flying machines, learn to fly on simulators and design and build gliders. The last part of the course will explore space travel and what it is like to live in space.

Class Materials:

Students are required to bring their own FLIGHT and SPACE ring binder folder to class, pens/pencils and a writing pad.

Class Rules and Expectations In addition to following the school’s procedures and expectations students should follow these classroom expectations:

1.Follow directions quickly.

2.Raise your hand for permission to talk

3.Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.

4.Respect yourselves, your fellow students, your teacher and classroom

5.Contribute to a positive classroom environment

Consequences:

1st. Verbal warning.

2nd. Teacher Student conference (automated call)

3rdClass beautification (time period depends on student behavior, this will be served during nutrition)

4th. Parent conference

5th. Dean referral. (Students will be referred to the Dean at Teacher’s discretion depending on the severity of the incident)

Note: parents can be notified by ConnectEd, remind101, email and text regarding their child’s behavior. Parents are encouraged to sign up for remind101 a cell phone text based service.

Rewards: Students that work well in class will achieve the reward of an excellent grade. Post Cards home, Aerospace Engineer of The Month and Mr White Bucks.

Grading System

Project 80% Classwork 10%

Engineer’s Journal 10%

Grade boundaries: 90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 50-69 % D, Below 50% F

Important Information:

This class involves the use of computer simulation programs. Students will be flying a virtual airplane and maneuvering a virtual moon rover. This class requires self discipline, control and concentration. The simulation programs are not meant to be played like video games.
