Overview of the Week:

We will continue a new unit focusing on Realistic Fiction. The children will plan, write, illustrate, and edit Realistic Fiction. We are focusing on describing with words. We are working on using adjectives to make pictures in the mind of our reader. In Reading we will review strategies for reading “tricky” words and think about the words we read. Good readers understand all the words they read, and write down and find out more about words they don’t know.We will also continue a focus on characters and getting to know the characters in the books we read. Word Study groups are busy learning and practicing patterns and sounds that will help us to become better at reading and spelling. For our grammar point for the week, students willwork with contractions by playingContraction Action!

In math we are finishing Chapter 5. We will continue to work on “Fact Power” by practicing solving addition and subtraction problems in a set amount of time. Our Fact Family work will reinforce the connection between addition and subtraction, and simplify memorizing facts by linking four facts together. Our Chapter 5 test is Friday, January 22nd.

In science, we will become geologists as we study earth materials. We will separate and label river rocks by size using screening tools.

Have a fun week!
