Moed Bet 2012

Hellolisteners. This is Frank Benson with our program Amazing Stories. Today I invited Sandra Barker who volunteers in an organization called, Save the Children. Hello Sandra.

Hello, Frank.

Please tell us about the organization Save the Children.

This organization has many wonderful projects around the world. We help children in more than 100 countries and we do many different things. For example, we bring doctors to take care of sick children and we buy medicines and food for the children. We also build schools.

Can you tell us about one of the projects?

Yes. I want to tell you about our project in Cambodia and about the man who helped us in this project. In 2008, we asked Colin Thompson to visit the school we built in Cambodia. Mr. Thompson is a famous writer of children’s books. When he came to visit the school, the teachers told him about a problem that many of the school children had.

What was the problem?

Many of the children live in small villages and on farms that are far away from the school. There are no buses and the children cannot walk to school because it is too far. So, many children did not come to school. Mr. Thompson had the idea to give bicycles to children so they could ride to school. We thought it was a great idea and decided to buy the bicycles. Thanks to these bicycles many more children can come to school every day.

That’s great. I heard that Mr. Thompson did more to help the organization. What else did he do?

He wrote a children’s book about bicycles. The book has stories that Mr. Thompson and other writers wrote about their first bicycles. There are also stories that children wrote. One child wrote that his bicycle is his "best friend". The book has wonderful pictures thatfamous artists painted. Mr. Thompson gives our organization all the money that he makes from selling the book. This helps us buy even more bicycles for school children.

What a great story! I hope that many of our listeners will want to buy the book. Thank you Sandra for telling us about Save the Children. Goodbye.
