MEG runs approximately 250 workshops each year across 30 local schools. Samba drumming is one of the most popular and regular workshops MEG provides. We receive many requests for Samba workshops since Samba Drumming requires team work and cooperation; it also develops listening skills and helps children to follow directions. As well as passing on our love for music, we hope to encourage the children to develop these important skills.
Through getting the children involved practically, we hope that they feel a sense of accomplishment in playing a piece of Samba music and excitement in playing instruments they may never otherwise have the opportunity to play.
We also hope to give the members of MEG valuable experience in community music activities, specialising in delivering music workshops in schools. It is a fun and friendly environment for students to gain experience in the fields of music and teaching, and the experiences are very rewarding.
The reason we are applying for funding is because MEG feel the need to purchase a new, child-friendly, stackable Samba Kit. Currently we are sharing one with Samba Society and it is not very child-friendly. Furthermore the equipment is not always available, can be double-booked and there are difficulties as to where the responsibility lies for maintaining and up-keeping the instruments. The current kit is very large and therefore taxi fares cos a lot more as we need more than one taxi to transport instruments. A stackable kit will reduce costs in the long run.
How would you be able to acknowledge the support of YuFund publicly? / We will do everything we can to promote YuFund as receiving a grant for this project is so important to us. We will include YuFund logos in all printed and online publicity. We will also express our sincere thanks through speeches made to those people who benefit from the grant. We will make sure that all the schools are aware that the samba workshops can take place because of generous donations from alumni, for which we are very grateful.
We are also keen to get involved if there is any way that we can promote YuFund on campus, such as during Giving to York week.
