FOI2017/149

Would you have information with regard to the number of outgoing and incoming Erasmus students in your institution, and how that compares to students going on an international exchange?

Please provide information for 2014-15 to 2016-17, and 2017-18 if available.

Data source:

Data was compiled from several sources: a bespoke Erasmus Report (FOI2016-81) was re-run to update 2016/17 data, along with a bespoke report on Junior/Language Year Abroad (JYA) enrolments. To include postgraduate outgoing exchanges, HESA 2014/15 and 2015/16 data was used (using SOAS copies of HESA returns for these years) and 2016/17 enrolments were identified from an existingend of year report that was run on 2-Aug-2017 (20170802 End of year ENSTATS 16-17).

The Postgraduate (PGT) enrolment reports were filtered to identify Programmes with an intensive language component, and from these, students who were on the second year of their programme were identified, as this is typically when the PGT exchange occurs. However, the nature of this exchange is flexible, and students may vary the length of their exchange from a few weeks to a few months, both within and out of term dates, or may choose not to undertake an exchange. This information is only confirmed by Departments during the HESA return process.

SOAS does not hold this information yet for 2017/18 Academic year.

Parameters:

(i)Session

The data covers HESA returns for 2014/15 and 2015/16 and end of year enrolments for 2016/17.

(ii)Mobility Status

Undergraduate students with the HESA field of MOBSCHEME=03 are identified as outgoing ERASMUS students. Incoming Erasmus students are identified by a programme code identifying an ERASMUS enrolment at SOAS.

Postgraduate students were identified as those with MOBSCHEME=01. For 2016/17data, where this data has not yet been reported, students in the second year of intensive language programmes were identified as likely to go on exchange.

Language Year Abroad students are identified as having a mode code = N

(iii)Method

Erasmus and Junior/Language Year Abroad students have a method level of undergraduate. Postgraduate Taught students comprise the remaining exchange cohort.

(iv)Headcount

Headcount has been provided. Note that some ERASMUS programmes occur across only one term, or for two terms, as well as full-year. JYA occurs for a full year, and PGT Mobility schemes occur across a range of periods from weeks to months.

Rounding strategy

The data have been rounded using the same rounding methodology that is used by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Their strategy is summarised below (sections on FTE and percentages not reproduced as not relevant):

Due to the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Human Rights Act 1998, HESA implements a strategy in published and released tabulations designed to prevent the disclosure of personal information about any individual. This strategy involves rounding all numbers to the nearest multiple of 5 and suppressing percentages and averages based on small populations.

HESA Services Standard Rounding Methodology:

  • 0, 1, 2 are rounded to 0
  • All other numbers are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5

Note that Totals are rounded separately, so the total will not always equal the sum of the row/column it represents.
