What do I do when I buy or acquire a shotgun ?

You must show your certificate to the person who is giving or selling the shotgun to you. They will need to complete the details of the gun and their details on table 2 of your certificate, which is on the back of the certificate. Once table 2 is complete the gun is now “on the certificate” and the certificate does not need to be returned to the police.

However, both you and the person selling or giving the gun must notify the Firearm Licensing Unit who issued your certificate of the transaction supplying full details of the shotgun and the details of both parties involved.

These notifications must be in writing and sent to the Firearm Licensing Unit by recorded or registered post.

What do I do when I buy or acquire a firearm ?

The difference between firearm and shotgun certificates when transferring a gun is that the firearm certificate must have the authority to acquire i.e. type and calibre specified before the firearm can be transferred. Otherwise the procedure to follow is same as the transfer of a shotgun except the gun details etc are completed on table 1 of the firearm certificate.

Please bear in mind that once a firearm has been purchased this authority has been fulfilled. If in the future you sell the firearm and want to acquire another you will have to apply for a variation to request authority for another firearm.

PLEASE NOTE - Failure to notify either the acquisition or the disposal of a gun is an offence

The main points to remember are:

  • You must notify, in writing either by email, FAX or letter, to the Firearm Licensing Unit of when you buy or acquire a gun; or when you sell or dispose of a gun. If sending this via postal service it should be sent by registered or recorded post.
  • You should not write on table 2 (shotgun), table 1 (firearm) of your own certificate, this is where the person selling the gun to you will add it onto your certificate.
  • When you sell or dispose of a gun you need not make any amendments to your own certificate.
  • The only occasion that you will write on your own certificate is when you sign it on the front.
  • There is no need to send your certificate to the police when you buy or sell guns. Your records will be updated as a result of your notification.
