SketchUp Pro Application and Privacy Information
A new learning tool is being used by the school, called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp Pro is a 3D modeling software for professionals. SketchUp is easy and intuitive, allowing anyone to model in 3D quickly and accurately.” The school will be downloading the application to the school server for your child’s use while taking this course. There are two aspects to the program. One is a drawing/modeling aspect as described above. The other is the 3D Warehouse.
“The 3D Warehouse is a collection of 3D models of buildings, bridges, cars, spaceships, futons, dinosaurs and everything else in the universe.” Anyone has the ability to browse the warehouse but to upload your own drawings to the 3D Warehouse.
Sketch-up Pro allows your child to:
- Use the drawing/modelling application
- Store drawings on the schools server
- Browse and download from the 3D Warehouse
It is strongly recommended that students’ store their drawings on the school server only, which is allowed with this learning tool. Any information stored locally with the drawing will be used for education purposes only and deleted from the server 1 year after the course ends.
However, as described above there is a feature for each student to share their work with all SketchUp Pro users worldwide by uploading their documents to the 3D. Each time work is to be saved the program will prompt the student to save the document to this external server. If your child uses this service, they may be prompted to create another account, and this is NOT recommended. It is strongly recommended your child store all their drawings on the school’s server only.
One of the reasons creating an outside account is not recommended is that any information supplied when creating an outside account is uploaded to and stored on servers outside of Canada and therefore subject to foreign laws and regulations, including the US Patriot Act. Page 3 and 4 detail the information collected when setting up a Gmail account.
When work is saved onto the school server the only personal information that will be collected by the school will be students’ names, class information and students’ drawings. This information will be collected for the purposes of grading under the authority of section 26(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Parent/Guardian SketchUp Pro Notice and Consent Form
This document is intended to ensure that parents have read and understood the information attached to this document and to:
1) notify them of the consequences of using SketchUp Pro; and
2)provide the consent necessary to allow children to use this software.
I understand that my child may be prompted to create a Gmail Account for the purpose of uploading to the 3D Warehouse and that if this option is selected by the student any personal information collected during this process is stored outside of Canada and is therefore subject to foreign laws and regulations, including the US Patriot Act.
I understand that it is not necessary to create a Gmail Account to use the Sketch-up Pro and that it is strongly recommended that drawings be stored on the school’s local server in Canada only.
