  • Prior to submitting the Nomination of Examiners form to the Graduate Research Office, the School must contact potential examiners to ascertain their interest and availability. The Graduate Research Office will send a formal invitation once the examiners have been endorsed and the Thesis has been submitted.

  • Each nomination should include a brief justification as to why the examiner has been nominated and provide evidence that the nominated examiner is an internationally recognised expert in their field. If available, please provide the link to their research page (profile page or WARP equivalent).

  • Candidates are not to be involved in the process of examiner selection. The identity of potential, nominated or confirmed examiners must not be released to the candidate.

  • All examiners must be external to the University of Tasmania.

Chair of Examiners
  • A Chair of Examiners will be appointed by the Head of School to act as an independent Chair throughout the examination process of a Candidate’s Thesis. Where the Head of School is also a Supervisor of the Candidate, the relevant FacultyDean/Institute Director will appoint the Chair of Examiners.

  • Please ensure you refer to3.9 Chair of Examinersof theHigher Degree by Research Thesis Preparation, Submission and Examination Policywhen nominating the Chair of Examiners.

  • It is recommended by the Dean of Graduate Research that the Head of School appoint someone other than themselves or the Graduate Research Coordinator (GRC) as the Chair of Examiners, to remove any perceived conflict of interest.

Examination Process – Next Steps

The candidate submits their thesis for examination via iGRad
The Head of School approves the thesis via iGRad, confirming that it is suitable for submission
The Graduate Research Office sends a formal invite to examine the thesis to the examiners
The examiners accept the invitation and declare any potential conflicts of interest
The Graduate Research Office sends the thesis to the examiners*
*unless it has been determined that there is the potential for a conflict of interest to exist between the examiner and various parties, including the candidate, the supervisor, the University, the subject matter itself or another examiner
The examiners submit their recommendation and report on the thesis to the Graduate Research Office
The Graduate Research Office sends the examiner recommendations and reports to the Chair of Examiners
The Chair of Examiners, in consultation with the supervisory team, makes a recommendation to the Graduate Research Office
The Dean of Graduate Research may consider the recommendation of the Chair of Examiners, along with the reports, before determining how to proceed
The Graduate Research Office sends the reports, along with the deadline for corrections, to the candidate
The candidate makes the required corrections to their thesis
The candidate submits their corrected/final thesis to the Chair of Examiners
The Chair of Examiners initiates the relevant process to review corrections to the thesis, dependant on the recommendation
The Chair of Examiners determines if the thesis corrections are adequate and advises the Head of School that the thesis is complete
The Head of School endorses the recommendation and sends approval that the degree be awarded to the Graduate Research Office
