Difficulties: Throwing and Catching
Key Factors Involved: Balance, stable shoulder girdle, trunk strength, proprioception (body awareness)
Rose has difficulties with the following when attempting throwing and catching:
Throwing:
  • Looking at the target she is aiming for
  • Poor balance. Rose overbalances when throwing
Catching:
  • Tracking a ball in flight and positioning herself in the correct position to catch it
  • Using both hands to catch a ball. Rose tries to catch with her dominant hand only

Pupil Perception:
  • Rose is becoming more aware of her difficulties in PE lessons
  • Rose is reluctant to participate in any games involving throwing and catching
  • Rose frequency forgets her PE kit in an attempt to get out of her PE lessons
  • Rose is left handed

Throwing
Can the child push a ball/object at a target?
If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Push a Koosh ball at a target
  • Move to a lighter or slightly deflated ball which will roll more slowly
  • Use a ball with bells in for a visually impaired child
Can the child roll a ball?
If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Roll a large foam ball:
-To a wall
-To an adult
-To a peer
-Across a table top to a peer
-Into a ‘goal’ e.g. between cones
-At a target e.g. skittle
-Repeat above with smaller ball

Can the child aim at a target on the floor?

If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Drop a beanbag/Koosh ball into a bucket
  • Drop a beanbag/Koosh ball into a smaller container
  • Throw a Koosh ball on a piece of string at a target (it’s easier to retrieve)
  • Throw a beanbag/Koosh ball into a bucket, gradually increasing distance
  • Aim for a hoop on the floor
  • Repeat the activities with a variety of balls (differing sizes, weights and textures)

Can the child hit a target on the wall?

If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Throw a beanbag high up in the air
  • Throw a beanbag at a wall (under arm/over arm/two handed)
  • Increase the distance from the wall
  • Throw at a large target e.g. door
  • Throw at a smaller target
  • Throw in the air to land on a mat
  • Throw in the air to land on a table
  • Throw in the air to land in a hoop
  • Throw to an adult
  • Throw to a peer
  • Repeat activities with a variety of balls as before
Teaching points for right handed children (reverse for left handed children)
Under arm throwing
1.If throwing with right hand, left foot is forward for balance, body facing the target
2.Draw the hand straight back
3.Keep the eyes on the target
4.When throwing the hand should follow through towards the target and open at the appropriate time, fingers stretched towards the target

Over arm throwing

1.As above but the shoulders should be at right angles to the target
2.Stretch left hand towards the target and put right hand towards the ear with the elbow down
3.Throw finishing with the right hand forwards, pointing at the target

Catching

Can the child transfer a ball from one hand to another?

If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Transfer a beanbag form hand to hand
  • Gradually increase the distance between the hands
  • Use a variety of balls of differing sizes, weights and textures
Can the child receive a ball? (i.e. when it is rolled towards him/her)
If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Child sits with legs apart and receives a ball rolled by an adult or peer
  • Child kneels to receive a ball with two hands
  • With two hands the child stops a ball, which has been pushed along a table top

Can the child catch a ball?

If the pupil has difficulties try this:
  • Child catches a skipping rope (folded and tied) thrown by an adult
  • Repeat the activity with high and low throws
  • Repeat the activity with a variety of equipment e.g. beanbags, balloons (a balloon with rice in it appeals to children), balls
  • Child catches a ball as it drops off the table
  • Child stands, drops a ball and catches it as it returns
  • Throw a ball in the air and catch it
  • Catches a ball thrown by an adult
