Guidelines for Volunteers not working with Animals at the Staten Island Zoo

•At no time will I enter any restricted area of the Zoo, unless specifically permitted by the director or general curator.

•I will conduct myself in an orderly and professional manner at all times, and will not disturb Zoo staff or interfere with their work. Horseplay of any kind is not permitted.

•I will be allowed admission to the Zoo grounds, for the duration of service at the Zoo, and will not abuse the privilege. Please show your volunteer card to the cashier for admission to Zoo.

•At no time will I remove from the premises any equipment, material, or specimens.

•I will not represent him/herself as a salaried Zoo employee.

•I will not “hangout” with friends, family, or visitors for a long period of time.

•I will not invite friends to volunteer without prior authorization.

•I will treat the visiting public courtesy at all times. I may respond to visitors’ questions, but I will not provide incorrect information.

•I understand, volunteers under 18 may not show up for service without a previously assigned task or supervisor’s knowledge.

•If I cannot make a scheduled shift, the Volunteer Coordinator must be awarebefore the scheduled shift was to start.

•I must wear the zoo uniform at all times when on a scheduled shift.The zoo uniform consists of: clean tucked zoo volunteer T-shirt, clean khaki pants or shorts, closed toed shoes, and name tag. Denim jeans andshort shorts are not acceptable.

•I understand that I may not use my cell phone during my scheduled shift,except while on a scheduled break. Cell phones are permitted to be on vibrate incase of an emergency. This includes: cell phone conversations, text messaging, instant messaging, orwireless devices, such as Bluetooth.

•I understand that I may not smoke during my scheduled shift,except while on a scheduled break.

•I must sign in using the volunteer hour log book located in theEducation offices before the beginning of a shift and sign out after finishing with the scheduled shifts every time I’m at the zoo.

•The Staten Island Zoo reserves the right to do a background check on any individual.

•The Education Department reserves the right to dismiss any volunteer that does not comply with these rules. However, volunteers have the right to request a letter stating their volunteer services and the total number of hours.

Rules Specific to Zoofari Volunteers

•I understand that I need to be in 10th grade or above to volunteer at Zoofari Summer Camp.

•I understand that on a day to day basis I report to Summer Camp Instructors, Assistant Director of Education, and/or Director of Education.

•I understand that I must work 2 full weeks, Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 4:00pm.

•I understand that I will help prepare for the day’s activities and I will help clean up at the end of every day before I leave.
