Green Lea First School Newsletter –April 2018

Welcome Back

Welcome back to everyone after the Easter break. At last we seem to have some warm weather and it’s lovely to see the children enjoying the outdoors without needing hats, gloves, scarves etc.

Sun Cream

Regarding the application of Sun Cream please put this on in the morning before school. Children can bring named sun cream into school to put on at lunchtime, but please practise putting it on beforehand – showing them the correct amount to use – and stress to them they are not to put it onto other children. Staff are not officially permitted to apply suncream to children so sending in blocks or roll-on suncream is easier for children to use.

Please also make sure your child has a named sun hat in school.

Residential

Year 3 and 4 children enjoyed a day visit and residential to Standon Bowers at the end of last term. Their behaviour was exemplary and all had a wonderful time trying out new outdoor activities such as caving and climbing.

Pre-school

A meeting took place on 27th March for parents to hear about the takeover of pre-school by the School Governing board. Parents voted unanimously for the takeover to proceed and work is now taking place behind the scenes to enable this to happen.

Cool Pete

We are pleased to announce that Cool Pete is now visiting on Wednesday 2nd May. He has an exciting science day planned which involves rockets, fire and ice.

Walk to Church

On Friday 27th April children will be walking to the church (across the fields) to film as part of the community project. I will be accompanying the children along with Mrs Hart, Mrs Fletcher, Miss Britton and Mrs Adams. If you do not give permission for this visit please see myself or Mrs Hodgson before the 27th. Thank you.

Staffing

We are pleased to welcome Miss Britton as a teaching assistant in school. She will be based in class 2 but also work in class 1 for one afternoon a week. We are sorry to advise that Mrs Cameron is leaving her lunchtime supervisor role. We would like to thank her for carrying out this role over the last 2 years and also for helping out at Forest School – we wish her all the best. Miss Britton will take over lunchtime duties from 27th April.

SATs

Year 2 will be completing statutory SATs tests throughout May. The tests will be delivered to the children in such a way that they will not find them stressful and may not even realise they have done them! Mrs Richardson and Mrs Hart discussed the SATs at the last parents’ evening, however, if you require any further information please do not hesitate to ask.

Phonic Check

Year 1’s will take their statutory phonic check in June (week commencing 11th June). Again, this was discussed at parents’ evening. If you were given a copy of alien/non alien words please now practise these with your child, as it will help them to get used to the format of the check. If you would like more please do not hesitate to contact us.

Swimming

All children coped very well with swimming lessons and getting themselves changed. Boys need to wear tight trunks please.
