Plate Tectonics Book—74 points
You will create a story book to explain everything you have learned about plate tectonics. The directions for each page of your story book are below. Your story book will be due on test day (October 4, 2011)
Cover Page (21 points): your cover page will be a graphic organizer of plate tectonics. It needs to include the following:
Main Idea—1 point; 4 types of boundaries (in the graham cracker lab)—1 point each/4 total; details about each boundary (plate movement, lithosphere created or destroyed, features, real life examples) 4 points for each boundary/16 points total)
Earth’s Structure (8 points): This page will be dedicated to the structure of the earth. It needs to include the following:
Drawing of the earth 1 point; labeling each layer of the earth—1 point each/7 total (inner core, outer core, lower mantle, upper mantle, crust, lithosphere, asthenosphere); definition of tectonic plate—1 point
Convection (8 points): This page will be dedicated to explaining convection. It needs to include the following:
Explain the process of convection—6 points; Drawing of convection in the Earth—1 point; What does convection cause to occur—1 point
Convergent boundary (oceanic-oceanic) (5 points): This page will be dedicated to a convergent boundary between two oceanic plates. It needs to include the following:
Name of boundary—1 point; definition of boundary (what are the plates doing?)—1 point; What is happening to the lithosphere—1 point; Real life example—1 point; Land features associated with the boundary—1 point
Convergent boundary (continental-oceanic) (5 points): This page will be dedicated to a convergent boundary between a continental and an oceanic plate. It needs to include the following:
Name of boundary—1 point; definition of boundary (what are the plates doing?)—1 point; What is happening to the lithosphere—1 point; Real life example—1 point; Land features associated with the boundary—1 point
Divergent boundary (5 points): This page will be dedicated to a divergent boundary. It needs to include the following:
Name of boundary—1 point; definition of boundary (what are the plates doing?)—1 point; What is happening to the lithosphere—1 point; Real life example—1 point; Land features associated with the boundary—1 point
Transform Fault Boundary (5 points): This page will be dedicated to a transform fault boundary. It needs to include the following:
Name of boundary—1 point; definition of boundary (what are the plates doing?)—1 point; What is happening to the lithosphere—1 point; Real life example—1 point; Land features associated with the boundary—1 point
Earthquakes (9 points): this page will be dedicated to earthquakes. It needs to include the following:
P waves: how fast do the waves travel (relative speed)—1 point; what direction do the waves move—1 point; how much damage do the waves cause (relative damage)—1 point
S waves: how fast do the waves travel (relative speed)—1 point; what direction do the waves move—1 point; how much damage do the waves cause (relative damage)—1 point
Surface waves: how fast do the waves travel (relative speed)—1 point; what direction do the waves move—1 point; how much damage do the waves cause (relative damage)—1 point
Locating earthquakes (4 points): this page will be dedicated to locating earthquakes. It needs to include the following:
Explain how to locate an earthquake (what steps do you go through?)—4 points
Real life plate tectonics (4 points): this page will be dedicated to a real life example of plate tectonics. You may pick ANY example for this (it may be an example we talked about in class, it may be one you choose to research on your own.) This could include an earthquake, a volcano, a trench, etc. For this page, you need to discuss what the example is (1 point), what type of boundary this is formed at (1 point), an explanation of your example (1 point). Also, discuss what the impact of your example is (1 point). For the impact of your example, I am looking for what the impact on the earth was. (Ex: the earthquake in Indonesia killed over 200,000 people, it caused extensive damage to the buildings in the area, it caused a tsunami which lead to damage and death, etc.)
