253. PLANTING TREE CUTTINGS

1.SCOPE

The work shall consist of furnishing and planting tree cuttings as shown on the drawings and as specified.

2.MATERIALS

Cuttings shall be healthy, straight, vigorous, and free of disease, insect pests, eggs, or larvae, and shall be subject to inspection and approval at the place of collection and/or upon delivery.

The Contractor shall furnish cuttings obtained from native stock collected during the period from January 1 through February 28. The cuttings are to have a minimum butt diameter of 1 inch and a maximum butt diameter of 3 inches. The cuttings shall be a minimum of 10 feet long. The cuttings shall have all but the upper two side branches pruned flush with the main stem.

3.PLANTING

Each location shall be marked by the Contracting Officer's Representative with flags or markers in accordance with the planting plan as shown on the drawings. The Contractor shall give the Contracting Officer written notice at least 10 working days prior to the date anticipated for beginning planting, to facilitate the marking of the tree locations.

The tree cuttings shall be planted in 8-foot-deep holes at each marked location. The holes for planting the cuttings shall have a minimum 6-inch diameter. The tree cuttings are to be placed in the holes with the large end at the bottom. The hole is to be backfilled with lightly tamped native soil. Each plant shall have a 3-foot-diameter constructed basin around the plant. A 6-inch-deep saucer shall be formed around the plant by placing a ridge of soil around the edge of the plant as shown on the drawings. Each plant shall also have a protective shield installed as shown on the drawings.

Each plant shall be mulched as shown on the drawings.

All cuttings shall be thoroughly watered on the same day of planting.

All cuttings shall be planted within 5 days after collection. All cuttings will be placed with butts in water the day of collection and remain in water until the day of planting.

4.MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

For item of work for which specific unit prices are established in the contract, the number of plants will be counted. Payment for each plant will constitute full compensation for all labor, materials, equipment, and other items necessary and incidental to the site preparation, furnishing, and planting of the tree cuttings.
