Planting a container

This unit will introduce the learner to the basics of gardening as an activity for everyday life and also for a career opportunity. They will be able to handle plants and pot up a container that can be used as decoration in the school environment and take part in organising a plant sale. The learner will be able participate in a plant sale that will give them the opportunity of working as part of a team, have an insight into entrepreneurial activities and understand the economics involved in the retail side of horticulture. The learners will also have an opportunity to interact with customers. The skills that they will gain will be transferable for their everyday life in the future.

This unit includes:

  • H&S issues in the workplace and the selection and use of appropriate PPE and tools
  • Consideration of environmental issues in the workplace/garden and at home
  • Research into the career opportunities in the horticulture industry
  • The selection of appropriate containers and plants to produce a container display and a hanging basket for different seasons
  • Take part in organising a plant sale
  • Interact with others in a group and with customers during the plant sale
