Study Skills

Plan you homework!

Be specific when you record your assignments. When you sit down to do your homework later; you might forget which page to do unless you write it down.

Use abbreviations – like pg. for page and # for number – so that you have plenty of room to record ALL of your assignments in your agenda.

Plan your fun!

Don’t forget to plan some time to have fun with friends!

Do your homework BEFORE your fun time. That will make it more enjoyable!

Plan your goals!

Set weekly goals to keep you on track to achieving your dreams!

Make sure you are specific when writing your goals. You have to be able to measure your success.

Listening and Note Taking

Listen more than you write.

If you try to write EVERYTHING the teacher says, chances are you will miss something important. Instead, listen for the following phrases while the teacher is speaking. These are clues that what is about to be said is important:

“Listen to what I am saying . . .”

“This is important . . .”

“Because of this . . .”

“These results are . . .”

“Let’s go over this again . . .”

“Don’t forget this . . .”

“This will be on the test . . .”

“Make sure you know this . . .”

Take notes on a full sheet of paper and mark it with a subject, page number and date. When you go back to study your notes later, you can turn to the appropriate page in your textbook.

Keep you notes neat.

Use a good pencil or pen that won’t smear. Write clearly and neatly so that you won’t have trouble reading what you’ve written. Keep all of your notes from one subject together.

Test-taking Tips – True/False

Read the question carefully. If any part of the question is untrue, then the answer is FALSE.

Questions which include the words “all,” “never” and “always” are often FALSE.

Test-taking Tips – Multiple Choice

Read the question and then answer it in your mind before looking at the answer choices. Then, choose the one that is closest to your answer.

If you don’t know the answer, first cross out the answers you know are WRONG.

If you still don’t know the answer, then go with your first hunch. Don’t change an answer unless you know for sure that it will be right.

Look for answers to the question within the test. Sometimes one question will include the answer to another.
