Lesson 3 and 4

Plan, prepare and present your ideas to help others get the best out of the Internet.

______

Target Audience

Key Stage 4/5

Lesson Aim

Lesson 3 For pupils to work as a group to decide upon a suitable way to present a key issue about e- safety to their chosen audience

Lesson 4For pupils to present either:

a. Their prototype directly to their chosen audience

or:( For schools/colleges with less time available for this project)

b. Their key ideas, messages and conceptsto the rest of their class/tutor group

Learning Objectives

  • Pupils will identify a suitable key theme for their target audience.
  • Pupils will explore and choose an appropriate way to communicate with their target audience.
  • Pupils will evaluate the success of their resource.

Timing
These two lessons require a minimum of two hours. Lesson 3 requires students to research and plan their resource. Lesson 4 gives an opportunity for students to present their finished resources. / Organisation
Small group work.
Preparation Pupils should have completed lessons 1&2 and carried out some “Market research” relating to their chosen audience. / Resources: Copies of the resource pack, project planning sheet, access to the internet.

Lesson Outline(This lessonis presented only in outline. Class Teachers are encouraged to tailor the lesson framework to suit their needs)

Lesson 3
Starter / Review the students’ background work. Any surprises from their research? / 10 minutes
Lesson 3 / Introduce the project planning sheet. This sheet should be completed during this lesson.
Prior to working through the project planning sheet students should evaluate the different ways ideas could be presented to their chosen audiences. Ask pupils to look at “How can I communicate to an audience” handout. Would any of these suggestions suit their audience?
Encourage pupils to work their way through the resource packs, to identify the type of resource they are going to design e.g. blog/poster/film/animation/ presentation/ debate and to begin planning their internet safety resource.
The groups should be encouraged to have their project planning sheetsapproved by the class teacher as quickly as possible so that the rest of the lesson may then be spent developing their resource. / 40 minutes
Lesson 3
Plenary / Ask a spokesperson from each group for an update relating to their resource. What will they need to do in preparation for their presentation?
Students working towards lesson aim 4a (see above) should use time out of the classroom to begin to develop their prototypes.
Students working towards lesson aim 4b (see above) should use homework time to practise their presentations. / 10 minutes
Lesson 4 / Educators with more time available for this project should use lesson four for product development. All students should have the opportunity to create a prototype of their product. In the case of a blog a prototype would contain several blog posts and a mock up of the design.
Students should also work in their groups to decide how best to present their prototype and explain how it was developed.
Ideally, students should then present their prototypes to their chosen audiences. The chosen audiences should then evaluate the success of the resource.
For educators with a restricted timetable, lesson 4 can be used for students to present the key messages and ideas that they have developed. The students’ concepts should be appraised and evaluated by their peers.
In both cases students should evaluate their own resources and assess how far they have met the needs of their chosen audiences.
Plenary
  • What have students learnt from this project?
  • What would they improve if given the opportunity to develop a resource again?
  • Do students feel any of the resources could be developed further?
/ Further opportunities
Childnet recommends schools and colleges promote the work that students produce. Local newspapers can be contacted to cover the presentation element of the Advanced Project.
Where institutions feel projects have been particularly successful local businesses could be approached to sponsor further resource development.
Finally, Childnet would be delighted to hear about completed resources and teacher/students feedback about the Advanced Project.
