Course Description: Practical Economics is a one semester course required for students who graduate under the Practical course of study. This course is an introduction to the foundations and methods of economics. The focus of this course is the characteristics of different economic systems, the essential component of private property in a free market environment, the role of government in the economy in the United States and the effects of international trade and development on our lives.

Materials Required: The materials used in this class is are various hands-on , daily reading and written materials and are provided for each student. Economics is the book used in class. Students will be expected to bring pencils, pens, and paper daily.

Grading System: Students will read and explore materials related to Economics and the United States Economic system, which systematically covers a wide spectrum of Economics topics. Supplemental materials will also be presented. Activities, class projects, and exams will be assigned to assess the progress of the students. A point system will determine the student grade. Parents and students may access this information anytime on Student/Parent Vue. Standard percentages of the total possible points will determine the letter grade for the semester grade. Classroom participation, positive behavior, and in-class work will determine the grade earned. Accommodations and modifications per individual IEP’s will be followed.

90%-100%=A

80%- 89%=B

70%- 79%=C

60%- 69%=D

Below 60%=F

Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. Make-up Work: All make-up work is the responsibility of the student. The student will have time to complete this work during Advisory period which is required each school day. I also have KKIS hours at 7:00-7:25 a.m. each day, or lunch by mutual agreement.

Attendance: Emphasis on the positive relationship between daily attendance and student success. The district policy regarding school absences shall be incorporated into this section.

“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 22)

Class Guidelines: All students are expected to observe and follow class guidelines, which are as follows:

1.Respect yourself, others, and property.

2.Be prepared to learn.

3.Follow instructions given during class sessions.

Consequences:

1.Verbal Warning.

2.Loss of participation points.

3.Private conference.

4.Phone call home.

5.Parent/teacher/student conference.
