Prerequisite(s): Completed Biology and having passed Algebra 1-2 with a C average or better. Students must pass Chemistry 1 with a D or better to enroll in Chemistry 2.

  1. Course Description:Chemistry 1-2 is a laboratory science course for academically able students, who may desire to go to college, and who may want to pursue a career involving the sciences. This course stresses critical thinking skills and will act as a solid base for college chemistry. Topics include: Data Analysis, the Periodic Table, Chemical Reactions, Chemical Bonds, the Mole concept, Compounds and Formulas, Phase Changes, Gas Laws, Acids and Bases, Solutions, Reaction Rates, Stoichiometry, the Nature of Science, and lab work using the scientific method.
  1. Materials Required:Chemistry Text: Modern Chemistry: Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt, a 3-ring binder, notebook paper, pencils and black or blue pen, highlighter, calculator, and an 8 ½” x 11” spiral wire bound notebook.

3. Grading System:A = 100-90%Classwork, Labs, Capstone Project and

B = 89-80%Activities= 35%

C = 79-70%Tests and Quizzes=45%

D = 69-60%CRT (End of Semester Tests) = 20%

F = 59% and below

Grades will be turned into the office every 3 weeks. You can also check your grade at any time on studentVUE. Accommodations and modifications will be included per IEP and 504 plans.StudentVue/ParentVue can be accessed through the Cesar Chavez High School homepage. Returning students will have the same password as last year. New students will receive their password during advisory class within the first two weeks of school. Parents may obtain their passwords by contacting the registration office. Additional information and resources for the class can be accessed at the teacher’s webpage onthe Cesar Chavez High School website.

4. Title I Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. 5. Make-up Policy:If you were absent you need to get the work you missed and get caught up. Ask me upon your return for the previous day(s) assignments. I will also post the assignments on the school website under my name and will have the accompanying worksheets and handouts available on the site for you to print off as well. Every day I will post the objectives and homework on the board. You can come in during advisory to get help or before or after school (by appointment.) Assignments one day late will be marked 20% off. Assignments two days late or more will be marked 40% off. Assignments that are later than two days must be completed in my classroom during advisory or by appointment before or after school unless given permission otherwise. Assignments not turned in before the end of the current unit we are working on will not receive credit.

6. Attendance:“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing.(PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 22)

Good attendance is necessary for students to succeed. If you have more than 12 absences you can receive loss of credit for your classes and consequences for absences will be in accordance with school policy. If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to get the work you missed. If you missed notes you must borrow them from a friend and copy them into your science notebook and/or come in during advisory or after school tutoring to get all your work made up.
