The Plan Check Engineer is responsible for the examination and checking of architectural as well as structural illustrations and drawings and specifications. He or she needs to work under the general supervision. He or she has to examine the illustrations for the building and structural permits. He or she works as a head of the management team and provide the engineering support. The engineer has to confirm the requirements in building codes.
Duties and responsibilities
There are a wide range of duties and responsibilities which are expected to be fulfilled by a plan check engineer:
- The main responsibility is to review and examine the architectural illustrations and drawings as well as engineering specifications.
- He or she has the duty to ensure the accuracy, completeness in the designs and compliance with structural, building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and energy conservation.
- It is also needed to monitor the disabled access numbers and codes and local structural building codes and regulations.
- He or she has the responsibility to perform the complicated engineering computations.
- It is also needed to analyze the engineering calculations given by applicants properly.
- He or she needs to provide the suggestions to the planning of the modifications to applicants in order to bring specifications.
- It is also needed to give the suggestions for the illustrations into full compliance with local and state building ordinances and codes.
- He or she has to advise the other plan checkers in proper resolution of mechanical, structural, electrical, energy conservation, plumbing and disabled access issues.
- He or she needs to work as a consultant as well for Building Official of necessary revisions to Standard Building Codes.
- It is the responsibility to assist in the establishment or revision of departmental and company policies.
- He or she has to oversee the modifications in procedures on field applications or construction of the codes.
- It is needed to provide training about the application of new policies, codes and procedures to the staff members of the different department.
Skills and Specifications
The required skills and specifications for the job are as follows:
- The person should have the ability to understand, interpret and utilize building regulations properly.
- The person needs to have a thorough and deepknowledge about the architectural illustrations and drawings as well as engineering specifications.
- He or she needs to be an excellent communicator and should have the skills both verbal and written.
- The person should have the ability to maintain the collaboration with the clients and other persons in an effective manner to the engineers, architects, inspectors, builders and the general public.
- The person should have adequate knowledge of providing appropriate training to the staff members.
Education and Qualifications
- The basic degree required to do the job is a bachelor’s degree in related courses such as mechanical, structural or civil engineering.
- He or she should have required past working experience of about three years in relevant discipline in reviewing building plans such as complex residential, commercial and industrial plans.
- He or she should have registered him or her as an Architect or Mechanical, Structural or Civil Engineer to do the job.
