Placement Title:Trainee Flint and Heritage Brick-worker

Attendance:Monday – Thursday7.30-17.00, Friday 7.30-16.15

Overall Purpose of the Placement:

The Placement will be based at various projects in East Anglia carrying out flint and brickwork repairs, repointing and other work as requiredon suitable heritage projects in the Region. The candidate will be provided with a broad range of learning opportunities to obtain suitable skills and evidence working towards a level 3 Heritage Skills NVQ Diploma in brickwork. F. A. Valiant is a specialist Historic Building Conservation contractor with a wide portfolio of public and private clients.

Main Areas of Work for the Trainee:

  • To carry out flint and brickwork conservation to historic buildings.
  • To gain experience in a variety of skills as specified in the Individual Training Plan and to be agreed with the Supervisor/Skills Coordinator. It is anticipated that the following range of skills will be covered during the course of the placement:
  • Reading specifications, method statements, schedules
  • Reading drawings
  • Recording work
  • Recognising architectural / archaeological features
  • Preparation of lime mortars
  • Correct use of hand tools and power tools
  • Dismantling and salvaging original material
  • Cutting out failed mortar joints
  • Cutting out hard cement pointing
  • Re-pointing
  • Removal of failed flint/brickwork
  • Selection of flint and bricks for re-use /replacement with new flint/bricks
  • Re-building of dismantled elements
  • Knapping and shaping flints
  • Building in harmony with existing structure
  • Judging correct alignment/marrying old and new flint/brickwork
  • Estimating materials
  • Aftercare of mortars
  • To be accountable for their own development by undertaking and completing records in accordance with the Bursary Holder agreement.
  • To follow specific instructions from your Placement Provider.
  • To ensure that all work is undertaken in line with the Placement Providers policies and rules and those of the Building Traditional Building Skills Resilience and Community in England project
  • To be responsible forthe health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Trainees will also learn how to work safely and will be taught about the risks associated with the project and how to avoid them.
  • They will also learn how to work with respect for the historic environment in order to avoid inadvertent harm to the fabric.
  • Due to the location of some of these walls, the interface between the historic and the wildlife environments will also be explored on this placement.
  • The Trainee may be required to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Placement Provider and will be expected to work within the Bursary Terms and Conditions
