Job Description
Assistant Director
Supervisor: Director of Outdoor Ministries (“Camp Director” or “Director”)
General Expectations
- Represent Horton Center in a professional manner consistent with its mission statement.
- Assist campers, counselors and deans with any and all needs. Model this attitude for the staff and work to cultivate a staff culture of service and generosity.
- Help to build camp morale and sense of community. Encourage growth in staff members, and abide by the Horton Center Covenant
- Enforce camp rules at all times, including at night.
- Be available for as-needed week-long shift as cabin counselor.
- Clean bathrooms, wash dishes, general cleaning
- Lead campers in group building activities (‘challenges’)
- Camper supervision
Assistant Director Duties
- Fulfill Camp Director’s role when Camp Director is off-site or unavailable. Report any and all breaches of covenant or camp policy to the Camp Director.
- Train & supervise staff in collaboration with Director & Program Director.
- Work with Director to complete bi-weekly performance reviews.
- In collaboration with the Program Director, schedule the staff to meet the needs for daily duties, chores, hikes, Faith Discovery Groups, and programming.
- Be a leader in staff activities, meetings, and in-service trainings.
- Assist the Director as requested communicating consistently with on-site Director throughout the day.
- Be available to campers, counselors, and deans for disclosures, homesick campers, and other sensitive issues as they arise. Maintain confidentiality, work to be a non-anxious presence, and collaborate with Director to make decisions and take action as appropriate.
- Collaborate with Program Director to oversee challenge program supervising staff and maintaining safety of challenge elements and staff use of them.
- In collaboration with the Camp Director, maintain ACA Standards & record keeping
- Train staff to work in the camp store. Assist the Camp Director with store management
- Manage flow of maintenance and program requests and assign to staff members as needed.
- Make or arrange necessary trips to town to pick up general supplies - attempt to consolidate trips.
- Work with Director and Program Director to be sure a director is present at volunteer counselor meeting and to be sure campers are supervised during this meeting.
- In coordination with the Director and Program Director lead every other Saturday camp clean up, counselor check-in, and counselor slide show as needed.
- With the Program Director, provide administration support to the Director such as health forms
- Fill in as needed with other areas of staff.
- Other duties as assigned
