December 2014

Dear Gemborites

INVITATION : ANNUAL EASTER GEMBOREE 2015, JOZINI, 3-6 APRIL 2015

The Pietermaritzburg Gem and Mineral Club invites you to this, the 48th Gemboree to be held in Northern Zululand, around the Jozini area, over the Easter weekend in 2015. Your host is the Pietermaritzburg Gem and Mineral Club with support from the Natal Mineral and Gem Society.

The Northern Zululand area has a complex geological history, and specimens which can be found range from agates, amethyst, quartz to fossils. There is a wide range of scenery, and of course a number of games reserves are found in the area which are also worth a visit. The Jozini Dam is well known for fishing competitions.

Whilst very fancy 5 star accommodation is available, the committee has spent a considerable amount of time researching suitable accommodation which will hopefully meet the needs of the rock and gem collectors. The main venue is the Baobab Inn, which is well located next to the N2, about 30kms south of Mkhuzi. This venue will be the gathering point as well as the venue for those people interested in setting up a table and selling specimens. Other suitable alternative accommodation has been located within 10kms of the Baobab Inn where chalets and camping sites are available, including, Msunduzi River Lodge and a rustic hunting camp.

In summary, the details for the Gemboree are as follows :

Date : Friday 3 April - Monday 6 April

Main Venue :Baobab Inn

Accommodation : Baobab Inn, Msunduzi River Lodge, Hunting Camp.

Bookings :Booking forms are attached and will be open until the end of February 2015.

Please note the following :

1Information will be updated as it becomes available.

2We have had positive support from the local dealers in the area.

3A tent will be provided for the swop and sell. There will be no charge for dealers, but 10% of the takings would be appreciated.

4Donations for the auction would also be appreciated.

5The Baobab Inn has a large boma for large groups of people, as well as individual braai facilities.

6Items which may have been forgotten can be bought at the main garage in Mkhuzi.

7Binoculars are suggested as an added item to pack, as game and birds may be spotted.

8Dealers and exhibitors are welcome to join the Gemboree.

9The weather in the area can be unpredictable, so it will be wise to prepare for all types of weather. Hats, bags, picks, hammers and spades will all be of use in the dig for specimens. In addition proper shoes are recommended because of the large thorns found at the collecting sites.

Looking forward to an exciting Gemboree.
