Pictorial quilts to be featured at September meeting

Linda Cantrell was a painter before she was a quilter. She made her first quilt in 1980 and before long she was thinking of pictorial quilts. Appliqué was a natural choice with fabrics and embroidery thread becoming her paints and brushes.

She is self-taught in appliqué and quilting. Creating quilts of her own designs is her specialty with her time spent quilting, teaching or thinking about the next project.

She will be bringing us a lecture entitled “Appliqué...I Did It My Way”. That is a good thing for this quilter. I look forward to hearing her. Linda’s workshop will be “self-portrait”.

There are still a few spots open for the workshop. Please see me if you are interested.

Note: there will be a $5 fee for nonmembers at this meeting.

2007 Challenge

Attention challengers!!! Your inspired works are due this month so stitch fast! You may bring them to me at the regular guild meeting on September 11th, or to the Stitching Post, Cross Pointe Center, 101 e. Alex-Bell Rd., on Thursday, September 27th between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. If neither of these are convenient, please call me to make other arrangements.

A note from the president…

Programs and workshops are vital to the spirit of the guild. That is also the primary responsibility of the Vice President. Now is the perfect opportunity for a person to step forward to serve in that role as Susan Hill plans to step down in the new year.

Several years ago when I was in that position, I was a Co-Vice President with Barb Stevens. I say that only to make the point that the job can be shared in a variety of ways. One person doesn’t have to do it all! The Vice President can have a committee of friends help, and we always encourage the members of the guild to bring forth suggestions.

Susan has completed the planning through most of 2008. She would be happy to talk with anybody who has an interest in the job. Her phone number 426-4740.

You can also call a member of our Nominating Committee: nancy Smith 426-8233, Bootie Zengel 433-1323 or Sandy Gebele 236-5850. The guild needs to vote on the slate in October.

All this we do for the loving of quilting,

Ron Lundquist

President, 294-7844

“Self-portrait” workshop

Please note: there was a mistake in last month’s newsletter. Roxanne’s Glue Baste-it will only be $3 (not $30) from Linda. That’s only if you don’t have any or can’t find any.

The workshop ($35) will be at the Peace Lutheran church on Dayton Xenia Rd. The church is across from the Beavercreek post office. It will be held on September 12 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. the room is in the basement of the church. Drive around to the handicap entrance and enter there. Please bring a bag lunch.

If you have any more questions, please let me know. Thanks.

(P.S.: There was a mix-up on the lecture/workshop names on the website…hop it caused no grief…--ed)

Sunshine News

If you hear of a member who could use our support, please call Lee Peterson at 439-7298.
Martha McShane joined a heavenly quilting circle on Friday, July 27, 2007. Now she will be able to remember and continue her favorite pastime. Martha had been a member of our guild and attended many retreats. She was known in the Barrett Room as “Queen Martha” or “Martha the Ripper”. She made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren often designing her own patterns. Even more importantly, she passed her gift for this traditional craft on to her daughters, Mary Boyle and Kathy Bean, a guild member.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kathy. If you would like to send her a sympathy card or note, please send to:

September’s 3rd Tuesday Stitch-in

Evening stitch-in held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.

The 3rd Tuesday evening stitch-in will be held September 18th at Chris Kettler’s home. The address is 6918 Morrow Dr., Dayton. Her telephone number is 890-6023.

Please call Chris for directions and to let her know you’ll be coming. Enjoy an evening with friends and get some of your quilting and piecing done!

Secret Stitchers

Anyone who would like to can join in. Sign up is at the September meeting. You learn who your Secret Stitcher is in November and gifting begins in December.

Here is the idea… from December to May you give someone an inexpensive gift every month and they don’t know who you are and you don’t know who you’re getting your gift from.

This is a great way to get to know someone in the guild that may you don’t already know and may never have known until you were paired with him or her. At the June meeting we will unveil ourselves to our newly found friends or giggle that our old friend never knew it was us.

Maximum exchange spending should only be $2.50 per month. The cost of a nice card, fat quarter or bag of candy. If you can not attend the September meeting but still would like to participate, please call Shari Brindley at 937-372-8861, and she will set you up or you can call if you have other questions.

Sally F. Kerr Memorial

Retreat Scholarship Fund

We are pleased and honored to have this fund provided in Sally’s memory by her husband, Bill. It is available so that for years to come a “quilter in need” can be provided with a full or partial scholarship, so she will be able to attend retreat. The friendship, fellowship and fun at quilt retreat is enjoyed by all who attend!

Anyone that would like to donate to keep this scholarship going into the future can do so by simply marking the Retreat Registration form and including it with their retreat fees. If you are not attending retreat and would like to donate either contact me, Diane McLane (retreat scholarship fund chairperson) or Shari Brindley the 2008 MVQG retreat chairperson.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship or know someone that would be a candidate, please get a form from the registration table at the meeting or contact Shari or me.

We will take applications starting at the September meeting through the November meeting. Applications will be kept confidential and recipients will be notified before the December meeting. Thank you.

2008 Retreat Information

The following is general retreat info and helpful hints to make your retreat a more rewarding experience.

Lodging

Check in time is not until 5 p.m. Friday. Please go to the front desk to get your room number and key at that time. Sometimes we can get into our rooms earlier; please check at the front desk. Check out time is Noon on Sunday although we can sew until 4 p.m. bedrooms consist of twin beds (roll away for triples) with private baths, individually controlled heat and air, and daily linen service. There is a desk and chair in each room. There are no phones or televisions.

Sewing Rooms

The Darby room accommodates the most people (because of the amount of sewers, no personal irons should be used in this room due to power outages—with so many computerized sewing machines we would like to avoid damages that may be caused by power surges). Irons are available at each end of the room for your convenience.

The Chaminade room is farthest away from the front desk. Due to its location, the room will be supplied with ice and coffee provided by Bergamo. Restrooms are directly across the hall. It’s convenient for delivering your sewing equipment to your place because there is a door to the outside nearby. For security purposes, unless you’re carrying items in or out, keep the outside door closed.

The Barret room is located next to the front desk and is a retreat within the retreat. The ladies in this room usually bring all of their own supplies, do all of their own set up and adjustments. They have it down to a science now.

Miscellaneous Information

“Is she still in her p.j.’s?” Yes she is! Yes, you can sew in your night clothes, (Notice, I did not say skimpy nighty) or get all dolled up for breakfast if you want. It’s up to you. Some of us rarely take off our slippers (watch out for pins on the loose).

Other than Bergamo meals, no other food will be served. We are welcome to bring snacks and drinks to the sewing room. Many of us bring things to share and all are welcome to the snacks that are on the tables in rooms they are sewing in. There are also vending machines down by the Chaminade room. Sometimes you may not care for what is being served at meal times so snacks are encouraged. We are working with the kitchen manager closely to try not to run out of selections, but we are not guaranteed to get exactly what we want for a particular meal. You may not get what you want, but you won’t go hungry, you don’t have to cook it, clear the table or do the dishes.? (I realize this is a touchy subject to some of us and we all love good food, but let’s please remember, this is not a culinary retreat, we are not here to eat, we are here to sew and have a good time with old friends and make new ones.)

We are working on getting massage therapist’s again this year for saturday and sunday. Sign up sheets are available when registering for retreat and during the retreat. Preregistration is encouraged. This is a separate cost from the retreat and you would be required to pay the therapist at the time the massage is received.

There is a large central area where you can lay out your quilt blocks, do some cutting and get several opinions on what your next step should be. Also, ask those around you if you have a quilting question. Everyone is so nice and helpful. We won’t leave you hanging on a noose. Many of us will saddle right up beside you and help you out.

Friendship Blocks: Everyone is encouraged to sew a friendship block, sign it and turn it in to the committee at retreat. Every year someone wins these blocks as a cherished memory of the retreat.

Optional projects: This year we will have a mystery quilt and some small projects that are fun to do. Keep an eye on the Newsletter for mystery fabric needs and instructions.

Some items to bring:

• sewing machine and an extension cord

• tools with your name on them

• rotary cutters and small mats
