6) BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1) NEED FOR THE STUDY :

Milo’s scientific name is thespesia populnea1,2 and it is also know as Portia tree . thespesia is a genus of Malvaceae with basically tropical and subtropical world wide distribution3. Probably it originated in India, but is a common plant of costal strands across old world tropics.

Especially in south India thespesia populnea is commonly named as medicinal plant and found to possess useful medicinal properties3,4 such as antifertility , anti-inflammatory, antioxidant , purgative and hepto protective5 activity etc and also the bark , leaves and flowers are useful in cutaneous infections such as scabes , psoriasis , eczema , ringworms , guinea worm , anti-inflammatory for poultice as a folk medicine etc.

Literature survey revealed that the phytochemical screening of thespesia populnea was carried out by isolating various phytoconstituents from different parts of the plant using various standard procedures6 for extraction using the solvents by increasing polarity

Petroleum ether, Ethyl acetate , chloroform , methanol etc.

So for there is no clear report on the phytochemical and biological studies from the root of Thespesia populnea. Hence this work has been taken up for phytochemical investigation and screening for biological activity on root of thespesia populnea .

6.2.) REVIEW OF LITERATURE

6.3.) MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY :

The present work is an attempt :

  1. To investigate the phytochemical constituents and biological activity on root of Thespesia populnea linn.
  1. extraction of root powder by using the solvents like water , Petroleum ether, Ethyl- acetate , chloroform , methanol and purification of extract through chromatographic studies , identification of phytoconstituents by chemical test etc
  1. Microbial assay are carried out on root extract by cup-plate method using gram +ve and gram −ve bacteria.
