Physical education Lesson 3

Class: Yr 9
Objectives: Introduce the skill of rucking – Application of the skill to the game situation
Big picture: Pupils have learnt about passing, committing the man, and the different role of forwards and backs. They are extending this knowledge. Week 1 as starter activity introduce rucking by using exemplar footage. As plenary pupils to practice against tackle bag whilst being videoed. As starter activity in week 2 evaluate performance of gp against exemplar model – highlight differences and similarities in order to set targets for improvement

Resources: Rugby balls, tackle bags, lap top with exemplar footage, video player
Provision for:

G&T – Allow defender to become more active, challenging questions, introduce refereeing rucks for offsides

SEN - Use of cones to mark positions of different players, and their runs. Increased support, ensure rucking shield remains passive.
Intro: Week 1 – Intro to rucking skills on laptop using exemplar model (in changing rooms).
Week 2 – Comparison of pupils rucking skills with exemplar model in order to analyse and set target for improvement
Main: Week 1 – Develop skills in gps of 6 against tackle bag. Talk about rules relating to rucking
Week 2 – Target areas to improve from analysis of footage
Plenary: Week 1 – Video each gp, either practicing against tackle bag or in semi competitive situation.
Week 2 – Video gp trying to use ruck in game situation for analysis of offsides, speed of ruck, positions of various players etc.
