PHY 111 Mousetrap Powered Egg Delivery Vehicle Feedback

A.  Did you learn much physics doing this project? Explain.

1.No, I did not learn as much physics as I thought I would during this project because during the course of the project my group and I were more focused on design of the project and how it would perform rather on how it would work

2.yes

3.I did learn physics doing this project but I feel that some more direction was needed. The fact I have not taken a physics class before this one I was blind and had no Idea what was going on so I was blind. There was no focus to my learning for the first few weeks.

4.I thought that we did in fact learn a lot due to the in class discussions along with the hands on approach. I think that learning by doing is the best way to learn anything.

5.yes I did. I learned about velocity, motion, and displacement. How energy works to move objects. Gravity.

6.yes, I learned some things about physics but I also learned that I need to spend a lot more time on the studying and research because some of it is difficult to understand.

7.Yes I learned concepts about acceleration, velocity, gravity and Newton’s laws of motion. I enjoyed having the hands on experience of creating something to demonstrate the theories that I discovered in class.

8.yes, all the concepts such as acceleration, velocity, etc. were explained in an indirect way in which we learned more than we expected

9.Yes, we had to take into account many Physics properties in order to accomplish results that we were looking for. I learned many formulas and definitions as force, mass, weight, acceleration.

10.Yes I learned a lot however I did not really memorize any term or definitions. I did have fun.

11.yes, there was velocity, movement, power, and acceleration.

12.well since I already took physics in high school, the first project was sort of a review. I did learn new stuff about torque and group communication.

13.Some. I learned the difference between theoretical physics, and the application of physic's principles. Things that work well in a lab under controlled conditions are a far cry from actually using them in the real world. Working out a formula is only a guide toward the actual working model. Often the results prove quite different from the ideal model. It is also interesting to note that a small car pushing a large truck is applying the same amount of force as the truck is. One would be inclined to believe that the truck is applying a larger force because of its larger mass. This is not the case. It was also interesting to note how much the mass of a vehicle affects the efficiency of it. This is an extrapolation of the idea that a heavy mousetrap vehicle requires a considerably larger amount of energy to drive it. I learned that how the energy of a mousetrap is used is also very important. Different approaches reap different results, so utilizing the energy efficiently is also important.

14. I'm not sure. I think I learned some physics more intuitively than consciously.

B.  Please list at least three things that you like about this course so far.

No matter how bad a course is, you should be able to find at least 3 nice things to say...

1.the Relaxed atmosphere. 2. The ability to work closely with others in my class. 3. The Fact that we can ask the instructor a question no matter how crazy it seems

2.we are having fun we are learning working in teams

3.1. The freedom. 2. The unneeded homework was cut out to make our minds work and explore 3. the unique projects.

4.In class discussions learning by doing method of teaching we get to change groups

5.the teamwork in my group. A unique way to learn about physics than the traditional method the actual building of projects and you can see yourself actually learning while doing the project.

6.I like that we work in groups if we had to do these projects alone I wouldn’t be able to. I also like that there is no set assigned homework< don’t get me wrong I know research is homework but its not like its due the next day. I like Thursdays are our specific group day it helps, its is hard to find time to meet outside of class.

7.I really like doing projects to learn visually to really see what our goals would be. I enjoy the laid back atmosphere and the reduced stress in this class while still learning a great deal about physics. I think that not having written tests also helps the class concentrate on particular concepts and then the test is to use them in the project successfully

8.I loved the fact that we do group work. At first, this wasn't the greatest thing but as I learned how valuable other peoples ideas are, we all united and created a great project and got along great. Also the indirect physics factor was great. In the past physics was horrible, but this made everything more interesting! The last thing I can say was likable about the course was the independence to do your work at your own rate.

9.1. Relaxed environment. 2. We learn physics terms without pressure. 3. Have enough time to work on project.

10.1.)liked being able to budget my own time. 2.)come up with my own Ideas 3.) enjoyed coming to class, saw a goal besides getting a grade.

11.Teacher is cool easy to talk to. It is fun to work in groups. not as much homework as I thought there would be.

12.the style of Mr. Weaver is by far the most enjoyable thing so far. I like working in groups. I also like the in class labs.

13.I like the application of physics over the theory, since most of the time people aren't working with theoretically perfect conditions. I like the openness of the class which makes it more interesting. I like the working as a team approach as it helps develop one for the real world where this occurs very frequently

14.Project was fun overall. the classroom discussion and activities thinking

C.  Please list at least three things that you don't like about this course so far.

No matter how good a course is, you should be able to identify at least 3 unsavory things...

1.1.  lack of music in the classroom 2. long class length 3. No real objective for project competencies

2.long hours lots of writing

3.1. The unclearness of what is expected in the project throughout. 2. The time it takes out side of class. 3. The minimal direction at the beginning when we needed it to get started.

4.we have some of the same people in our group, I believe that its possible to go ahead and make it so that we have all new group members. I don’t like how long the notebook was, and also the fact that it was not really explained to the class on how to put it together. I would also like to see a little bit more on the discussion in class, they are good but maybe a bit more explanation to the class or the class should speak out more on all the topics

5.I thought that we were left to fend for ourselves without really ideas or input from the instructor on what to do. I thought that we should get the data first on what we need to know how to do the project first then work on the project. I don't like the computer projects

6.I don’t like that I was lost a lot of the time, especially in the notebook. I don’t like that a lot of outside of class work is required. I can understand some but it takes some time to put these projects together. I didn’t like how at the end of the project the notebook was due and I really didn’t know what to put in it.

7.I do not like not being able to really understand what is needed and wanted in the written reports and the notebook. Unfortunately I need in-depth explanations as to what is required. Maybe more structure to the class and focusing on the book would be good with mathematical equations and so forth. The classroom can get to stuffy and cold at times (can you turn down the air conditioner?)

8.One thing that really was a misfortune about this course was that we really didn't know what to expect. Our whole group crammed the paper into the last few days before it was due because we were working on the construction. Next, the fact that there were four people in our group made it hard to meet out side of class. And last. The only other thing I can think of is all the paper work in general that is required. It is very technical and hard.

9.1. Presentations make me nervous.

10.1.)groups’ members not always willing to share n work. 2.) unsure at first of classes project. 3.) needed a little more direction or format

11.daily activity journal takes a lot of time. class is a long time. sometimes hard to find time to be with other members of my team.

12.I didn't like so much freedom. I know this might sound funny but I was not challenged as much as I liked. I actually enjoy figuring out physics problems.

13.Sometimes it is difficult to work in a team since we don't always know the strong or weak points of a team mate. I haven't had much instruction in how to write a proper report, and therefore am not sure what you expect even with an outline. Perhaps you could incorporate a little more in how to apply some of these principles into the project at hand.

14.the extra time outside the class needed to meet with team members’ notebook

D.  Please describe at least 3 changes we could make to this course immediately to make it better.

1.1.  have better discussions with class during lectures 2. list what you want us to learn during the course of the project 3. allow more time toward project research and design

2.now that we have done one note book, I think we are starting to understand the expectations a little better. Mostly what I see is that we need to learn from the last project and focus more on the research part of it. and have more fun with the building part.

3.1. lighten the written load for repetition of the same things repeatable. 2. Make the interview longer and let us talk so you can see what we learned so the written part is not the only way you see our learning since I have a hard time putting it into worlds. 3. give us a couple days at the start to get some supper basic ideas on physics that we will need in the project so maybe a one day lecture.

4.i answered them in question 3

5.Let students say more about their ideas or what they interpret the problem or solution should be Give us more ideas on our projects as we working on it. Explain the notebook more clearly as to what you expect from each section of the notebook.

6.Maybe a little more direction. Clearer on the notebook, like what you want out of it. Some more time from when the projects due and when the report and notebook are due

7.TURN DOWN THE AIR CONDITIONER Spend more time using the data collectors to understand more concepts and the graphs that are created Spend more time discussing gravity, collision etc. Unfortunately the web addresses given for this project did not really supply excellent information about these concepts.

8.On the first project I would explain the process of every thing a little better. people did not know where to start in any way, and before long they were out of time. Other than that, I wouldn't change anything.

9.1. Play soft music more often.

10.1.)more Ideas or concepts suggested in class. 2.)more structured environment

11.There is so much Physics going on outside of class it is too hard to keep a journal of this every time. a little bit of time before class gets over with on Tuesdays to talk with our team members.

12.longer breaks to use restroom.

13.Help get us on the right track with using the results received from our lab experiments in the project application. Help us in being able to write a good report. I haven't had any lab report classes (I don't even know if one is offered). I think writing a good report is important, but until someone shows us how to write one, it may or may not be acceptable to you. We need a little better guidance in the laws of physics BEFORE we begin the project. It is easy to start off in the wrong direction to begin, and then have to change it partly through the project.

14.i don't know. I don't like surveys much. they make me nervous.

E.  What else would you like to tell me?

1.nothing

2.I would recommend taking you for physics if any of my friends asked.

3.I hope this format takes for you I an glad to have this class I feel it is a very worthy class. I applaud you on the attempt and the risk in trying this style and I feel I have and will learn a lot in this class and will enjoy the whole time doing it. Oh and nice choose of clothes for class each day they are very unique I like them.

4.I would like to say that over all ur class is the best hands on class that I have ever take. I think that with this approach I am able to learn better skills for applying them for the real world. I think that we should switch groups again before we do this project, I don’t think that the groups are fairly put together.

5.I appreciate the non traditional method of teaching physics. I am not good at sciences very well. However this method give me an opportunity to see what I am learning and how to apply it. I actually think about physics more and it applies in life.

6.The hardest part of these projects is the notebook

7.You are a great teacher and I look forward to taking your class next semester!

8.I really do enjoy this course and I plan to take 112 with you also. thanks

9.Are you teaching physics 112 next semester?

10.Really enjoy attending class and the flexibility it allows me to find my own solutions.

11.Physics has been fun so far. I always hear horror stories about Physics but so far it is untrue. I enjoy coming to class.

12.No Response

13.I like the course except for the abovementioned items. It makes much more sense applying these things in a real project than in a "textbook" model. It also teaches us that the theoretical and the real are not the same thing. Overall, I like the course.

14.this style class takes some getting used to, but it is pretty good. Watching our projects come to fruition was very satisfying.
