Photoshop Elements > Workflow > First Steps Cheat Sheet #2
When You’re Done, Save As a JPEG
The section above ended the previous cheat sheet.
It’s now at the end of this cheat sheet.
Cropping & Straightening
Now would be a good time to crop and straighten, but let’s learn about that later.
Let’s do some more global editing.
2 - Global Editing
We did Levels, the exposure and contrast.
Color is next.
Color Correction
Three situations, boldfaced below, are covered.
18) If the photograph was taken in the shade or on an overcast day, the photograph may be too blue.
Warm it up.
Do the following.
a) Make sure the Levels layer is active (highlighted).
b) Go to yin-yang and select Photo Filter.
The Photo Filter window opens.
c) In the menu, change it from 85 to 81.
d) Use the Density slider to change the strength of the 81 filter.
e) Close the Photo Filter window by clicking the x at the top of the window.
If you need to reopen the Photo Filter window, double click the two-circles icon in the Photo Filter layer.
f) Judge your editing by repeatedly clicking the eye icon on the left end of the Photo Filter layer.
19) If the color is off in a scene, make sure the Background copy layer is active (highlighted).
Then, at the top of your screen, go to Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color Cast.
Follow the directions in the window.
Use the Reset button if needed.
20) If the skin tone is off in a portrait, make sure the Background copy layer is active (highlighted).
Then, at the top of your screen, go to Enhance > Adjust Color > Adjust Color for Skin Tone.
Follow the directions in the window.
Use the Reset button if needed.
3 - Local Editing
Local editing affects parts of a photograph.
Burning & Dodging
Burning is darkening.
Dodging is lightening.
21) If needed, review the tutorial: Photoshop Elements > Burning & Dodging > General Purpose: Overlay Layer.
Thereafter, use the Burning & Dodging with an Overlay Layer Cheat Sheet.
A Best Practice
Rename the layers as you work.
For example, you may use many burning and dodging layers.
Do the following.
a) Carefully position the cursor on the layer name, Layer 1.
b) Double click.
c) Enter a new name, such as Sky or foreground.
Remove Defects
22) Remove small defects in a scene with the Spot Healing Brush tool.
Cloning
23) Use the Clone Stamp tool to cover up unwanted parts of your photograph.
You take a good part of the photograph and paste it on the unwanted area.
When You’re Done, Save As a JPEG
24) At the top of your screen, go to File > Save As.
25) In the Format menu, change Photoshop to JPEG.
26) Look for the file name, such as DSC_1234.jpg
Windows
If you’re using a Windows computer, copy is appended to the original file name.
Click Save.
Mac
If you’re using a Mac, do the following.
a) Carefully click before the period in .jpg.
b) Enter –edited or some other text.
Your file is now DSC_1234-edited.jpg.
c) Click Save.
