Keeping a

Photography Journal

Purpose: To develop creativity. To develop , keep, and share ideas. To plan and prepare for photo shoots. To gather new ideas.

Goal: To have a book full of images and ideas that you came up with. To have a book of images and ideas you can later use. To have a book of images and ideas you can share with fellow photographers.

Charge: Using the prompts given, develop a page every week of your findings. You can share thoughts and ideas from those findings. You can write and paste images. You can draw the ideas out. Anything goes as long you are developing photography ideas, being creative, and completing the pages.

Each week you will share with me what you have discovered and studied this week in photography. The places you find and discover photographs is endless. You are not limited to the Internet as magazine, books, and mailers are still published. You must write, draw, and/or paste images on each page. You can make this an art history lesson for your self and study a single photographer or you can study a body of work, but explore all possibilities for the topic you are given.

From time to time you will be asked to shoot examples yourself and share them. This can be done through print, Instagram, Flickr, or other media resources. When the images are published, they must each be annotated along with your completed page in your journal. All work includes a full journal page even if publishing images.

Feedback: This will be given in the form of a ranked check as listed below.

√+’s = excellent, went over and above, successful

√’s = did what you were asked, tried something new, good work, could use some verve

√-’s = lacking, could have put more effort and thought into work

0 = no work, not completed, absent and showed no work when returned

Due Date: Every Friday

  • No credit given for the assignment if completed on Friday in class.
  • You will get one of listed marks as feedback, but are welcome to discuss with me further.
  • Work not accepted after the day of return if absent on the Friday due date.
  • At the end of 5 weeks, a summative grade will be given for the journal assignments.
