Fluency
10 minutes / Possible on-line resources
  • Fluency Sentences – posted resource
  • Fluency Passages – posted resource

  • Reading fluency is the speed, accuracy and prosody (expression) that a person uses when reading a text. It is not about racing through a passage but reading in a smooth manner with expression and phrasing.
  • Fluency has the greatest impact on reading comprehension. When a student can read with automatic decoding skills, then they can connect with the text and read with emotion and expression.
  • Students can increase their fluency level with practice. Partner reading and repeated readings of the same text are great ways to practice.

The main purpose of shared reading is to provide students with an enjoyable experience, introduce them to a variety of authors, illustrators and types of texts to entice them to become a reader. The second and equally as important purpose is to teach children the reading process and teach systematically and explicitly how to be readers and writers themselves.

Brain Breaks
3-5 minutes every hour or as needed / Teacher determines activity incorporating movement with some connection to the preceding lesson

Physical movement increases blood flow bringing more oxygen to the brain and leads to improved concentration. Well-developed breaks can help students stretch, develop flexibility, improve coordination, and gain focus for the next lesson. The idea is to provide some moderate activity that gets the blood pumping so form and skill are not the focus of activity breaks. Some movements can also incorporate core academic concepts.
Math/Literature Connection
45 minutes / Teacher selects a title from the literature library based on the results of the math pretest. Suggested activities are provided in the Math/Literature Connection Framework. Titles for Second Grade are:
  • Count on Pablo
  • A Place for Zero
  • Henry Hikes to Fitchburg
  • Measuring Penny

Computer Lab Time
30-40 minutes / Students practice online reading and responding to multiple choice questions
  • Online reading opportunity: Go to and click the red “log in now tab. For the school name select Hoosier Family of Readers, Indiana Department of Education. Over 4,000 books can be accessed.
